Outrage Erupts as 9/11 Victim’s Daughter Slams Etsy for T-Shirt Mocking Tragedy

Ah yes, the internet strikes again, reminding us that some jokes really should remain buried, just like the memories of 9/11. In a jaw-dropping display of poor taste, Etsy found itself under fire as Amy Stabile, daughter of 9/11 victim Herman Broghammer, expressed her outrage over a grotesque T-shirt design featuring none other than Garfield—yes, that lasagna-loving feline—mocking the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The shirt in question depicted Garfield as an airplane, flying into a cartoonish version of the Twin Towers, with the slogan, “9/11? Yeah! I’ll take 911 … orders of lasagna!” Because nothing says “humor” like trivializing a tragedy that claimed nearly 3,000 lives.
In a candid interview with Fox 5 New York, Stabile couldn’t contain her disbelief, stating, “I just couldn’t believe my eyes. Thousands of lives were murdered.” And honestly, can we blame her? The audacity of turning a national tragedy into a punchline is as baffling as it is heartbreaking. Stabile calls for a much-needed re-evaluation of Etsy’s policies, asserting, “Maybe it’s time to start creating policies where this goes against your company policies. You’re making money off terrorism.”
Despite Etsy’s spokesperson defending the decision to keep such items available by claiming that “humor is subjective,” it’s clear that a line has been crossed. The seller, NelliesNestStore, has since removed the offensive T-shirts, perhaps realizing that some humor should never leave the realm of private jokes. As Stabile urges for corporate responsibility, one can only hope that humanity will prevail over profit. After all, a little compassion goes a long way—especially when it comes to honoring the memories of those lost.
Class dismissed. Let’s keep our humor in check and our compassion on high alert.
