Why Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott Are in No Hurry to Tie the Knot

Hi, I’m Quinn Parker – coffee-fueled and ready to spill! Okay, so let me tell you – this is WILD!
Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott may be engaged since August 2023 but have yet to sketch out a single wedding plan. According to an interview published by People on August 7, Jonathan admitted, “We’ve just been having so much fun traveling with the kids and filming this show and stuff. So no, we have not actually made any plans yet.” That statement alone sets the tone for a couple who are redefining what engagement means in modern celebrity culture.
The pair began dating in late 2019 after meeting on Carpool Karaoke, quickly going Instagram official with their Halloween Horror Nights adventure at Universal Studios. Zooey, who shares daughter Elsie, 10, and son Charlie, 8, with ex-husband Jacob Pechenik, proved the perfect date for Jonathan’s brother’s spooky wedding. By Thanksgiving of that same year, Jonathan was declaring “I love you” in an Instagram caption, calling her the source of joy in his life. Sources: People Magazine, E! News.
Fast forward to November 2019, and the duo made a surprised red carpet debut at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards. Their fun-loving nature really shone on a Star Wars double date with Drew Scott and Linda Phan, followed by a cozy night at the premiere of Emma in Los Angeles. In April 2020, Zo and Jon hopped on Facebook Live to read Builder Brothers: Big Plans, the children’s book by Jonathan and his twin, Drew. By New Year 2021, Zooey was already praising Jonathan as her MVP for bringing light into an uncertain year, posting on Instagram that he was the reason she felt happy despite 2020’s chaos.
When Jonathan popped the question during a romantic getaway in Scotland last August, fans assumed wedding bells would start ringing immediately. Instead, they’ve been savoring their engagement. Jonathan shared with E! News in December 2023, “The good thing is when you find somebody, at this stage in our lives, we don’t have the energy or time for the BS anymore. We’re not taking any pressure from anybody.” Zooey echoed that sentiment, telling E! News, “We don’t know when we’re getting married yet. We’re just enjoying being engaged right now.”
Despite a clear vision for an intimate celebration—“Whatever we do, it has to be meaningful to us and we want to gather our friends and family and have a good time,” Jonathan told People—the couple is content focusing on their blended family adventures and work commitments. No guest list stress, no venue scouting, just two people at ease with the pace of their love story.
Stay tuned as we watch this slow-burn romance unfold. Who knows when those wedding invites will finally drop? I swear, I could talk about this all day.
