Why Diana’s Althorp Estate Will Skip William and Harry

Why Diana’s Althorp Estate Will Skip William and Harry
  • PublishedJuly 30, 2025

The Spencer family’s Althorp estate stays firmly within Charles Spencer’s line, not offering an inheritance to Princes William or Harry.

Hello, I’m Riley Carter, here to break down the royal twist with minimal fuss.

Okay, but like… why is this even a thing?

Princess Diana’s childhood home at Althorp Park spans over 13,000 acres in Northamptonshire and has been under Spencer stewardship since 1508. Despite her legacy and her status as the People’s Princess, the estate was never willed to her sons, Prince William or Prince Harry. Instead, it currently sits in the hands of her younger brother, Charles Spencer, the ninth Earl Spencer.

The land has been a Spencer stronghold for more than five centuries, passing down through generations by strict primogeniture rules. When Diana’s father assumed the earldom in 1975 he moved his family into the grand manor and its surrounding parkland. Today that legacy remains, with Charles Spencer firmly at the helm.

While Diana herself never bequeathed Althorp through her will, she did lend personal mementos and portraits for the annual exhibitions. The estate now features a display of her childhood toys and gowns, making Althorp a must-see for royal enthusiasts each summer, complete with Tudor gardens and winding woodlands.

Looking ahead, the property will transfer to his only son, Louis, Viscount Althorp, at Charles’ passing. That line of succession skips over Louis’ three older sisters—Lady Kitty, Lady Eliza and Lady Amelia—because the Spencers adhere to a long standing tradition of male inheritance. It is a modern paradox, since Diana’s daughters by marriage were once innocently expected to inherit from their mother.

Back in 2015 Charles confessed to the Daily Mail that he is “totally relaxed” about this custom, even though it might feel “against all tradition” to others. Later that year Lady Kitty told Tatler she is totally pro gender equality but “quite happy” to let her brother handle the estate. “I like that the house stays within the same family, with the same surname,” she explained.

Legal experts point out that Althorp remains bound by historic entailment under British peerage law, which locks the manor into a direct male line of succession. Even if William and Harry had pressed a claim, the stringent terms of that entailment would likely have shut the door on any such challenge, confirming that the Spencer statutes are not easily overturned.

Althorp holds deeper sentimental value as well. Diana is laid to rest on a secluded island at the center of the estate’s Oval Lake, a peaceful spot shielded from public view. Charles has remarked that the surrounding water keeps out unwanted visitors while the thick mud offers an extra layer of defense against interference.

That privacy means Princes William and Harry can drop by their mother’s memorial with little fuss. According to Charles, it is “very tranquil” and the brothers can “come and go as they wish whenever they want.”

In his 2023 memoir, Spare, Harry recounts bringing his wife, Meghan Markle, to Althorp for the 25th anniversary of Diana’s death in August 2022. He describes the duo crossing the lake by boat and gazing at the rolling fields, ancient trees and green acres where Diana once found moments of peace. “At long last, I was bringing the girl of my dreams home to meet mom,” he wrote.

So yeah, that’s where things stand – the next heir to Diana’s childhood home isn’t a prince but a Viscount Spencer. Make of it what you will.
