Whitney Way Thore’s Journey to Motherhood: Choosing a Sperm Donor and Facing Fertility Challenges

My Big Fat Fabulous Life star Whitney Way Thore recently detailed her process for choosing a sperm donor and confronting fertility hurdles in an exclusive chat with E! News.
Hello, I’m Sage Matthews, bringing you an inside look at celebrity realities with the precision of an award-winning journalist. In conversation with E! News, Whitney Way Thore opened up about her road to artificial insemination as she approached her 41st birthday while filming the thirteenth season of her hit TLC series.
Whitney explained that the initial task of sifting through a database of potential donors unleashed an unexpected wave of decision fatigue. She compared the experience to scrolling through a dating app “with way higher stakes,” noting that profiles looked promising until a question-and-answer section revealed poor communication skills. Despite not having rigid physical criteria, she admitted it only took a minor red flag to make her think, “Oh, never mind.”
To ease the burden, Whitney enlisted close friend Isaiah Martin—husband of her trainer Jessica Powell—to make the final pick. “I honestly could not handle the responsibility,” she confessed. When asked whether meeting a partner organically would simplify the choice, the North Carolina resident observed that traditional dating allows people to fall in love first and accept the biological outcome later, whereas selecting a donor requires a clinical level of scrutiny.
The star also shared her lifelong fight with polycystic ovary syndrome, describing how she has tackled weight fluctuations, hair growth in unexpected places, and chronic inflammation. Although she has learned to manage most PCOS symptoms over the years, the fertility component has become impossible to sideline once she decided to pursue motherhood. Her first insemination attempt did not result in pregnancy, a setback that “felt like a discouraging assurance that it was going to be a difficult road.”
Whitney confirmed she has frozen her eggs and discussed the possibility of involving a surrogate, but remains determined to try another insemination before exploring that option. Adoption, she said, did not feel like a viable path for her, and she questioned the logic of paying for surrogacy when she could continue her own efforts. Raised by her late mother, Barbara “Babs” Thore, and her father, Glenn Thore, she recalled the loving environment she experienced growing up and expressed her desire to replicate that for her future child.
Between teaching dance in London and planning for auditions back home, Whitney’s plate is full. Yet her commitment to starting a family remains unwavering. Watch this space as Whitney Way Thore balances reality stardom, health battles, and her most personal life chapter yet. That’s the journey so far.
