Tony Todd’s Family Calls Out Oscars for Snubbing Iconic Actor in ‘In Memoriam’ Tribute

Tony Todd’s Family Calls Out Oscars for Snubbing Iconic Actor in ‘In Memoriam’ Tribute
  • PublishedMarch 3, 2025

In a dramatic turn of events, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has ignited controversy by omitting actor Tony Todd from its annual ‘In Memoriam’ segment, much to the chagrin of his widow, Fatima. The “Candyman” star, who passed away at the age of 69 from natural causes, had a storied career marked by over 250 film and television credits. His omission has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions about the Academy’s long-standing issues with inclusivity, particularly regarding actors of color and women.

Fatima voiced her frustration to TMZ, implying that systemic biases may have played a role in her husband’s exclusion. She argued that the Academy often overlooks artists from marginalized backgrounds, stating, “People of color and women are often ignored as much as possible when it comes time for the Academy to honor the dead.” This sentiment echoes broader criticisms of the Oscars, which have faced accusations of racial insensitivity and lack of representation in recent years. Notably, the 2022 ceremony faced backlash for its treatment of actors like Daniel Kaluuya and others who have made significant contributions to the film industry but have been sidelined during award season.

Despite being a member of the Academy for three decades, Tony’s contributions seem to have been forgotten in this year’s tribute, leading Fatima to call for a re-evaluation of how the Academy conducts its memorial segment. She suggested that the Oscars might need to streamline other parts of the show to ensure that deserving artists are recognized. Industry insiders have echoed her concerns, with Todd’s representative, Jeffrey Goldberg, lamenting the oversight. “Tony was my friend and client for over 30 years, and I’m just sad that he wasn’t given the honor that he deserved,” he stated.

Interestingly, Tony held on just long enough to cast his vote for Kamala Harris in the 2020 presidential election, and according to Fatima, he passed away the same night he learned she had lost. With such a poignant final act, one can only wonder how the Academy could overlook such a significant figure in Hollywood history.

The Oscars have a checkered past when it comes to honoring the deceased, and Todd’s exclusion only adds fuel to the fire. As the Academy continues to navigate its diversity issues, one can only hope that future ceremonies will more accurately reflect the contributions of all artists, regardless of their background.
