Three Men Dead from Suspected Gas Poisoning at Japan’s Takayu Onsen Hot Springs

Three Men Dead from Suspected Gas Poisoning at Japan’s Takayu Onsen Hot Springs
  • PublishedFebruary 20, 2025

In a heartbreaking incident in the Takayu Onsen area of Fukushima, Japan, three men were found dead, suspected victims of hydrogen sulfide poisoning during a routine maintenance check at a popular hot springs resort. On February 17, the men—aged in their 50s and 60s—set out for what was supposed to be a standard job but never returned. Local news outlets like Asahi Shimbun and Kyodo News reported that after their absence raised concerns, a hotel employee contacted authorities around 8 p.m. on that day. It wasn’t until the next morning that a search team discovered their bodies lying in the snow, some 100 meters from the mountain trail entrance.

The findings are particularly alarming given that the Takayu Onsen is known for its mineral-rich waters, which though beneficial, also produce hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas that poses serious health risks. Notably, it has been emphasized that the area had unusually high concentrations of this gas at the time, as confirmed by authorities. Searches conducted by police and firefighters were made more challenging due to heavy snowfall, with more than 57 inches of snow reported in the area, causing hazardous conditions. Witness reports noted that the snowfall was some of the heaviest seen in recent memory.

The tragic deaths of these experienced staff members—a hotel manager and his team—have raised questions about safety procedures in environments where natural gases are present. In fact, personnel involved in the search efforts were required to use oxygen tanks, highlighting the dangers posed by these volcanic gases, which can be present even in areas that staff members know well. While the Takayu Onsen boasts a long history and has been voted one of Japan’s top resorts, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers surrounding hot springs, particularly those situated in volcanic regions.

Local authorities, including Fukushima prefectural police, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, while officials have not yet confirmed the official cause of death. Meanwhile, communities are mourning the loss of the three men, who were considered skilled and knowledgeable in their field. With the Takayu Onsen being renowned for its slightly milky, sulfur-saturated waters, this tragedy underscores the need for vigilance in these otherwise serene and healing spaces.
