Sydney Sweeney’s Jaw-Dropping Transformation as Christy Martin in Biopic Trailer

Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in “Euphoria” and “Anyone But You,” has undergone an incredible transformation to play Christy Martin, a 57-year-old professional boxer. The first trailer for the biopic, set to Stevie Nicks’ “Edge of Seventeen,” showcases Sweeney’s impressive physical change as she takes on the role of Martin, who made her boxing debut in 1989. The footage features Sweeney’s Martin getting punched in the face by an opponent in the ring, and it’s clear that she’s fully committed to the role.

Sweeney’s transformation didn’t happen overnight; she trained for over three months, boxing and weightlifting for several hours a day, and packed on between 30 and 35 pounds. She also refused to use a stunt double for the role, insisting that every single fight scene was done for real. “Every single fight you see, we are actually punching each other. We are going full force,” Sweeney told Vanity Fair.

The biopic explores Martin’s relationships with her conservative parents, dad John and mom Joyce, and her coach-turned-husband, Jim. The film’s description reads: “Christy Martin never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia—until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim.”

But Martin’s life wasn’t without its challenges. In 2010, her husband stabbed her several times and shot her in the chest at their Apopka, Fla., home. She survived the near-death experience, and her husband was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Martin later came out as gay and married Lisa Holewyne in 2017.

The film, directed by David Michôd, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last week and received a rapturous standing ovation, which left Sweeney in tears. “Christy, you are absolutely incredible, and I’m so honored. I’m gonna cry! Oh my God, you’re so inspirational,” Sweeney told Martin at the premiere.

Sweeney’s performance has been praised by critics, with The Post’s entertainment critic Johnny Oleksinski giving the film three out of four stars and calling Sweeney’s performance “a total knockout.” The film will be released in theaters on Nov. 7, and it’s clear that Sweeney’s transformation into Christy Martin is one to watch.
