Sydney Chandler Explains Why Variety Cover Cut Her from Alien: Earth Shoot

Sydney Chandler Explains Why Variety Cover Cut Her from Alien: Earth Shoot
  • PublishedAugust 12, 2025

Kai Montgomery here, and yes, I am mildly annoyed on your behalf. Sydney Chandler, the 29-year-old daughter of Kyle Chandler, addressed why she was excluded from a Variety cast shoot for FX’s Alien: Earth after declining to participate in an on-camera game with costars, calling the whole episode “really unfortunate.”

Look, I do not want to be the one to moralize about PR choreography, but here we are. Sydney told Entertainment Weekly on August 12 that she declined to take part in a video segment where teammates Timothy Olyphant and Noah Hawley answered personal questions about each other. She explained that she felt uncomfortable doing something like that and had not realized saying no might be a dealbreaker for appearing in the rest of the cover package. “I really wanted to be there for the photo shoot, and I was ready to talk anything and everything Alien,” she said, adding that she “never meant to offend.”

Variety, for its part, pushed back with an official statement to EW saying the outlet had invited Sydney to be part of the cover to celebrate her role in Alien: Earth and that they were transparent from the outset that the offer included video participation. Variety also said they continued negotiating with her team up through the morning of the shoot to see if she would join the video component.

So what happened? Simple friction between a rising actor’s comfort zone and legacy media expectations. Sydney was raised out of the public eye in Austin, Texas, and she has admitted she is still finding her footing in Hollywood. “I’m figuring out how much of my personal self I need to give, I want to give, I feel comfortable giving,” she told EW. That feels reasonable, not scandalous. She called the experience a learning opportunity while on a press tour for her new series and acknowledged the promotional grind is teaching her plenty. “Once this is completed, I’ll have a bit of a foundation and be able to go from there,” she said.

This is not the first time a talent has balked at seemingly lightweight behind-the-scenes bits only to find those bits are nonnegotiable for some outlets. Publications increasingly bundle stills with video elements and social content to maximize coverage, and some deals explicitly require stars to participate in all components. Variety’s remark that the offer “included video” is a textbook example of the industry’s expectations. Meanwhile, Sydney’s stance underscores a new generation of actors who are more deliberate about how much of their private selves they trade for publicity.

The fallout here is small but instructive: a missed cover photo rather than a career-derailing feud. Sydney lost the photo op, and Variety lost a castmate’s presence in the final package. Both sides are sticking to their principles—Variety on integrated coverage, Sydney on boundaries as she navigates promotion in public.

She is also not a stranger to high-profile projects; her credits include a supporting role in 2022’s Don’t Worry Darling, and Alien: Earth is another step in the public arc of her career. The bigger takeaway is the shifting power dynamics of modern promotion. Talent can still opt out of certain formats, but saying no may carry immediate consequences even if it is understandable.

In other words: she declined a game, lost a seat at the shoot, and now is learning the price of boundaries in a media world that loves content. That is the story, painfully simple and mildly instructive.

Stay tuned for how Sydney navigates the rest of the tour; she says she is learning, and frankly, the press circuit is a harsh tutor. Expect a calmer, more strategic Sydney next time, or at least one who knows precisely what is nonnegotiable before the camera rolls. Did anyone expect a different outcome? No? Thought so.
