Look, I don’t want to be the one to say it, but here we are. by Kai Montgomery

Superman continues to flex its muscles at the global box office, racking up staggering ticket sales weeks after its release and leaving fellow superheroes in the dust. According to Box Office Mojo, the latest Man of Steel outing opened to an impressive $132 million domestically and has already eclipsed $680 million in North American grosses. Even more eye-popping is its overseas haul, which has ballooned past $450 million, pushing the worldwide tally beyond the $1.13 billion mark.

Granted, it helps when your film is backed by the might of Warner Bros and marketed to the heavens with teaser trailers dropped months in advance. Variety reports that the studio’s global campaign included fan events in Tokyo, Munich, and São Paulo, fueling nonstop buzz. Cinemagoers seem to be responding in droves, giving the film an A Cinemascore and a solid 88 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

If you’re keeping track, this isn’t the first time a Kal-El adventure has dominated the charts, but it might be the most lucrative. It even outpaced the opening weekend of the last major superhero juggernaut, which bowed with $128 million three years ago. Deadline has confirmed that aisles were sold out in over 2,000 theaters across the United States, and ticket presales shattered Warner Bros records for a non-sequel release.

Critics are split on whether the film’s success hinges on nostalgia or genuine quality. Variety praised Henry Cavill’s “grounded portrayal” and the film’s “ambitious visual scope,” while others grumbled about pacing issues in the third act. But at the end of the day, audiences don’t seem to care, splurging on 3D and IMAX upgrades that add up fast on the financial ledger.

International markets have proven especially kind. Box Office Mojo highlights a whopping $60 million weekend in China alone, a territory that notoriously favors local productions. That performance places Superman among the top five Western releases ever in that region. In Europe, the U.K. and Germany combined for another $40 million over the same period.

Of course, all this success raises one question: what’s next for Superman? Warner Bros has already greenlit a sequel, aiming for a summer 2025 release. Industry insiders tell Variety the script is in flux but promises deeper dives into Lois Lane’s investigative journalism and the introduction of a classic villain in the final act.

So there you have it. A beaming alien in tights is still the unchallenged heavyweight champion of movie theaters worldwide, complete with record-shattering numbers and a sequel on the horizon. Strap in and prepare to see even bigger numbers as fall awards buzz ramps up.

And that, dear reader, is why we can’t have nice things.
