Spencer Pratt’s Charred Cable Box Saga: A Wildfire Tale with a Twist

Spencer Pratt’s Charred Cable Box Saga: A Wildfire Tale with a Twist
  • PublishedMarch 7, 2025

Spencer Pratt, reality TV’s ever-quotable star from “The Hills,” recently showcased his uncanny ability to find humor even in the ashes of disaster. After the devastating wildfires ravaged his Pacific Palisades home, the 41-year-old returned to the charred remains to retrieve a cable box. Yes, you heard that right—a cable box. In a cheeky Instagram video, Pratt held up the barely recognizable metal relic as he called out Spectrum, the cable company, asking, “How much am I going to get for it though?”

While one might think that a man whose home has literally gone up in flames would have bigger fish to fry, Pratt’s light-hearted approach reveals a more profound commentary on corporate customer service. Following his home’s destruction, Pratt engaged in a rather comical exchange with a Spectrum representative who, after hearing that his house had burned down, still asked about the return of the cable box. “I told them, ‘No, I didn’t grab it with my birth certificate and passport. I just left it…accidentally,’” Pratt recounted, emphasizing the absurdity of the situation.

In a follow-up to his initial video, Pratt revealed that a Spectrum rep later assured him that customers impacted by the wildfires wouldn’t be charged for damaged equipment. Spectrum’s response was nothing short of PR gold, stating they would review their communication protocols to ensure empathetic customer service in such tragic circumstances. The company also provided a special customer service line for those affected by the wildfires—because, let’s face it, nobody wants to be reminded of a lost cable box after losing their home.

For context, the wildfires that swept through Southern California this past January resulted in the destruction of thousands of homes, with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection confirming that the Palisades and Eaton fires were fully contained as of January 31. In the face of calamity, Pratt’s saga serves as both a reminder of the trials many are facing and the sometimes ludicrous nature of corporate protocol. One can only hope that other companies take a cue from Spectrum’s swift response and learn to exercise a bit of common sense amidst the flames.
