Soulja Boy Busted on Felon Weapons Charge After Late-Night Traffic Stop

Soulja Boy Busted on Felon Weapons Charge After Late-Night Traffic Stop
  • PublishedAugust 4, 2025

I’m Kai Montgomery, look, I don’t want to be the one to say it but here we go yet again with another headline you’ve heard before.

On August 3 just after 2:30 a.m., DeAndre Cortez Way, better known as Soulja Boy, was taken into custody in West Hollywood for carrying a firearm as a convicted felon, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The incident unfolded near Melrose Avenue and Genesee Avenue when LAPD officers pulled over the vehicle in which Soulja Boy was riding as a passenger. Once the stop was made, police say they found a handgun in his possession, triggering his immediate detention and arrest on charges he is legally barred from facing again.

Inmate records from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department show that the 35-year-old rapper was booked around 6 a.m. at the LAPD Metropolitan Detention Center. As of now it remains unclear whether he has been released on bail or continues to await proceedings behind bars.

E! News confirmed details with law enforcement, and spokespeople for Soulja Boy have not responded to requests for comment. Last time we tried to get a statement, it was crickets.

This arrest is not exactly groundbreaking for the “Crank That” artist. Back in 2019 he served more than three months in jail for a probation violation after being caught again with firearms and ammunition, per Los Angeles County Superior Court documents.

Adding fuel to the fire, a civil jury in April ordered him to pay $4 million to a former assistant who accused him of assault, sexual battery, gender violence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and unpaid wages. That verdict, revealed by the plaintiff’s legal team, sparked a harsh response from Soulja Boy’s lawyer Rickey Ivie.

“It is unfortunate that aspersions and misperceptions of a culture were allowed to influence the trial,” Ivie told NBC News at the time. “Mr. Way fully intends to pursue his post-trial remedies and to fight for a just result in this case.” Meanwhile a spokesperson told TMZ that Soulja Boy “would never put his hands on a female.”

This latest run-in with the law lands right after that multimillion-dollar civil defeat and fuels a growing narrative: plenty of hits on the charts but a talent for courtroom showdowns too. The music world might be chanting “Turn My Swag On” but the legal team is now the one working overtime.

He’ll likely be back in court soon to face felony weapons charges, and bail conditions could include enhanced monitoring given his record. Fans and critics alike will be watching to see if this arrest sidelines any upcoming projects or tours.

Did anyone expect a different outcome? No? Thought so.
