Snow White’s Disappointing Debut: Disney’s Live-Action Flop

Ah yes, the magical realm of Disney where every fairy tale has the potential for box office glory—unless it flops harder than a novice magician’s first trick. The live-action remake of “Snow White,” which debuted on March 21, has opened to a less-than-stellar reception, earning a mere $43 million during its opening weekend, as reported by Box Office Mojo. This unfortunate figure places the film among Disney’s lowest-grossing live-action recreations, especially when you consider it cost a staggering $270 million to produce. Initial projections had promised a debut between $48 and $58 million, but alas, reality had other plans.
While “Snow White” did outperform the pitiful earnings of other recent releases like “Black Bag” and “Captain America: Brave New World,” which raked in $4.4 million and $4.1 million respectively, it still leaves much to be desired. With an international total of $87.3 million, one might wonder if audiences were enchanted or simply snoozing through the latest retelling of the 1937 classic.
Rachel Zegler, the 23-year-old star playing the titular princess, has faced more than her fair share of scrutiny, including backlash over her Latinx heritage. She approached the criticism with grace, suggesting it stemmed from audiences’ passion for the beloved character. Meanwhile, Gal Gadot, donning the crown of the Evil Queen, expressed her excitement for the role, but even her star power couldn’t rescue this film from its lackluster reception.
Adding fuel to the fire, Peter Dinklage criticized Disney for perpetuating outdated stereotypes through the portrayal of dwarfs in the film. With a history steeped in fairy tale nostalgia, one might hope Disney would have learned from past mistakes, but here we are, watching yet another underwhelming adaptation.
Class dismissed. Perhaps next time, Disney will conjure up a little more magic.
