Sir Michael Caine, 92, Exits Retirement for ‘The Last Witch Hunter 2’ with Vin Diesel

Hello there, I’m Jordan Collins, your helpful guide through the world of celebrity news. I’ll break down the latest scoop on Sir Michael Caine’s surprising return to the big screen.
Sir Michael Caine, the 92-year-old acting legend, is coming out of retirement to star in “The Last Witch Hunter 2” alongside Vin Diesel. This sequel to their 2015 fantasy film will see Caine reprise his role as the 36th Dolan. According to Variety, Lionsgate and Diesel’s production company, One Race Films, are producing the project.
“The Last Witch Hunter” has become a global fan favorite since its release, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across various platforms over the past decade. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson stated, “That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world.” Fogelson also expressed his excitement about reuniting with Diesel, calling him “a true force in our industry.”
Directed by Breck Eisner, the original film follows an immortal witch hunter (Diesel) who, with the help of a priest (Caine), tries to stop a plague from destroying the world. The cast also includes Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Julie Engelbrecht.
This will be Caine’s first project since he announced his retirement from acting at age 90 in 2023. During an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today show, Caine shared his decision, saying, “I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, I am now. I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and it’s got incredible reviews. The only parts I’m likely to get now are old men.”
Caine has maintained a close bond with Diesel over the years. In his memoir, “Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over,” Caine wrote, “Vin’s special. I love Vin. We first met at a dinner party about thirty years ago. I just instinctively greeted him with a hug and announced to the whole room, ‘This is my son!'” Caine added, “Sometimes, you sense a connection. I just liked the guy immediately, he has a big heart. We’ve been great friends ever since.”
The sequel will allow Caine to work with Diesel again, and Fogelson noted that advancements in filmmaking technology will enable them to deliver the project on an even more ambitious scale.
Glad I could fill you in on this exciting update.
