Sinkhole Disaster: A 65-Foot Nightmare Swallows Surrey Street

Sinkhole Disaster: A 65-Foot Nightmare Swallows Surrey Street
  • PublishedFebruary 19, 2025

Residents in a quaint Surrey village are dealing with a major headache—and we’re not talking about a Monday morning meeting. A gigantic 65-foot sinkhole has opened up on Godstone High Street, and locals are feeling the pressure—literally. The chaos started on a chilly night earlier this February, leaving many to scramble for their lives and belongings. Tracey Jones, a local mom, pulled her whole clan out of danger, dubbing the experience an “absolute nightmare.” And hard to argue with that sentiment when your street suddenly decides to play hide-and-seek with the ground beneath it!

Local experts suspect the issue may stem from a ruptured water main, but there’s more to this story than just an unfortunate drip. Philip Collins, deputy dean of engineering at Brunel University, chimed in to suggest that the local geology—which features that notoriously fickle sand—could play a significant role in this dire situation. Sand is like that one friend who’s great at parties but a disaster in a serious situation—fun when it’s compacted and dry, but totally unreliable when it gets wet.

Adding to the tension, if the sinkhole continues to expand, there’s a real risk of more than just some crumbling asphalt. With concerns over potential pipe explosions, evacuation was the name of the game for local officials. Talk about hitting the panic button! Fortunately, all residents have been accounted for, and crews from SES Water are working around the clock to restore services and keep everyone hydrated. So, if you notice a little funky flavor or color in your drinking water, it’s just the sediment doing a little waltzing, and thankfully, no health risks are lurking in your cup.

But amid the chaos, the local water utility company has been a beacon of hope, working with a multi-agency response team to get things back on track. “Keep calm and carry on” is the motto we suppose, but let’s just hope that anyone on Godstone High Street is wishing for a brighter—and much drier—February!
