Sarah Michelle Gellar Gets Real About ‘Buffy’ Revival Nerves: Here’s What to Expect!
  • PublishedFebruary 18, 2025

So, in case you haven’t heard, Sarah Michelle Gellar, our beloved Buffy Summers, is diving back into the world of vampires, but this time it’s a whole new ball game. While chatting at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards, Gellar opened up about the revival of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” admitting it’s a bit of a mixed bag—there’s heartwarming excitement, but also a hefty dose of anxiety. “It’s overwhelming… Additionally, it’s incredibly nerve-wracking,” she confessed to People magazine. No pressure, right?

If you’re wondering what’s cooking, Gellar is gearing up to executive produce a sequel show alongside Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao. And while she’ll reprise her role as Buffy, don’t expect her to take the lead this time—new slayer alert! Thanks to the finale’s epic twist back in 2003, where Potentials across the globe became full-fledged Slayers, there’s room for fresh talent. Talk about passing the baton!

But let’s get real here: Gellar recognizes the mountain of expectations from die-hard fans who still vibe with Buffy’s legacy. “I wish there was a better word than overwhelming,” she mused—and for good reason! After all, she previously resisted the idea of a reboot, believing that the magic of Buffy’s world already stands the test of time. She told Us Weekly that while she understood why reboots happen, she really didn’t see the need for one. “If you have more story to tell, that’s great. I don’t feel that I do,” she explained back in 2019.

However, after some serious heart-to-hearts with Zhao and producer Gail Berman, Gellar decided the revival was worth a shot. And fans, sit tight: she insists they won’t produce this show unless they’re confident it’ll “get it right.” She dropped this nugget of hope on Instagram not long ago, promising only to move forward if they can live up to the legendary status of the original.

The original series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, wasn’t just a pop culture phenomenon; it also gave rise to a spinoff, “Angel,” and transitioned into a successful comic book series. All said, you can catch Buffy on Disney+ or Hulu while you wait for the new adventures to unfold. Here’s hoping this comeback slays!
