Rock Legend Dave Edmunds Battles for Life After Major Cardiac Arrest

Rock Legend Dave Edmunds Battles for Life After Major Cardiac Arrest
  • PublishedAugust 3, 2025

Dave Edmunds collapsed earlier this week after suffering a major cardiac arrest, leaving the 81-year-old rock icon in critical condition and prompting a heartbreaking update from his wife. Hello, I’m Jordan Collins and I guess I can simplify this for you: the Welsh musician famous for his 1970 hit “I Hear You Knocking” is now fighting for every breath.

Edmunds’ spouse, Karin Cecilia “Cici” Edmunds, broke the news on her personal Facebook page on July 29. According to her post, Dave literally died in her arms as she and a nurse administered chest compressions. After an agonizing period of “heavy CPR” that she performed herself, medical staff finally revived him, but not without serious consequences. Cici warned that he shows signs of brain damage and severe memory loss, and that another major arrest could be fatal. She confessed to feeling shock and possible PTSD from the ordeal.

Born in Cardiff on April 14, 1944, Edmunds first rose to prominence in the late 1960s with the blues rock outfit Love Sculpture. After that band dissolved in 1970, he launched a solo career with the album Rockpile in 1972. That record included his smash cover of Smiley Lewis’ “I Hear You Knocking,” which stayed at number one in the U.K. for six weeks and remains his signature song.

Fast forward to 1980 and Edmunds formed a new ensemble named Rockpile, teaming with Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner and Terry Williams. Their joint effort Seconds of Pleasure spawned memorable tracks like “Teacher, Teacher” and garnered rave reviews. Those sessions cemented Edmunds’ reputation not just as a singer but as a producer and guitar virtuoso.

In 2015 he released an all-instrumental album titled On Guitar Dave Edmunds: Rags & Classics, then slowly stepped back from the spotlight. Ultimate Classic Rock quoted him as saying he was “just sitting back” and planning his following year. Two years later his friend and former producer Brian Setzer confirmed Edmunds would retire after a final show in July 2017, sending heartfelt wishes to the veteran guitarist.

Now facing an uncertain future, Edmunds and his wife have a long recovery ahead. Cici expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love she has received, calling it a small comfort amid this uphill battle. Doctors reportedly worry about the likelihood of another cardiac event, and if it happens, her husband may not survive.

This health scare underscores the fragility even rock icons must confront. Fans and fellow musicians alike are sending prayers, while Cici has asked followers to keep her husband in their thoughts. I am telling you this not because it was hard to find but because you needed a clear picture of what’s happening to one of rock’s enduring figures.

Glad I could clear that up for you.
