Queen Latifah Confirms ‘The Equalizer’ Has No Encore as CBS Pulls the Plug

Queen Latifah Confirms ‘The Equalizer’ Has No Encore as CBS Pulls the Plug
  • PublishedMay 19, 2025

Here we go again: yet another beloved series gets the axe, and this time it’s Queen Latifah’s high-octane drama, The Equalizer. In a recent sit-down with People Magazine at a SAG-AFTRA panel, the rapper-turned-actor sounded like she’d just lost her keys for good—no revival talks, no secret scripts gathering dust, just radio silence from CBS headquarters. She admitted the network’s decision to cancel the show after four seasons “stung,” but added there are “no active conversations” about bringing back Robyn McCall’s vigilante justice.

CBS originally green-lit The Equalizer in 2021, banking on Latifah’s star power and the crime-solving formula that made the ’80s original a hit. Variety reported its first season pulled in decent streaming numbers, but Deadline shows ratings slid nearly 20 percent by Season 4, and budget concerns only fueled the fire. Cue predictable outcome: CBS cut production short, leaving the Season 4 finale with more cliffhangers than answers.

Fans didn’t take the news lying down. A Change.org petition has already amassed over 150,000 signatures, begging Paramount+ and other streamers to step in. Latifah, ever the professional, praised their passion but warned, “You can’t win a tug-of-war with a ghost.” Sources close to the showrunner told Deadline that creative differences and cost-saving measures killed any chance of a smooth handoff to a new network. Variety notes the writing team officially disbanded in March, scattering to other projects like Season 5 of Yellowstone and that inevitable Law & Order reboot.

If you’re pinning hopes on a Netflix miracle, think again. Paramount+ hasn’t commented beyond a standard “we’re exploring options,” and let’s be honest—when has “exploring options” ever resulted in a full-blown revival? Queen Latifah herself joked she’d be “thrilled to put on the Equalizer jacket again,” but her laughter sounded forced, like a stand-up comedian who’s just realized the mic’s off.

So strap in for disappointment: no open auditions, no surprise cameo announcements, no last-minute resurrections. The network’s coffers are closed, and the pop-culture conveyor belt has already moved on to the next round of reboots. Another piece of prime-time escapism bites the dust, and we’re left with reruns and memories—just as the streaming era promised more shows, not fewer.
