Prince Harry’s Security Battle: Another Royal Disappointment

Prince Harry’s Security Battle: Another Royal Disappointment
  • PublishedMay 2, 2025

If you thought the saga of Prince Harry couldn’t plummet any further into the depths of royal misfortune, think again. In a plot twist that feels all too predictable, the Duke of Sussex has faced yet another legal setback, losing his appeal to reinstate state-funded security during his visits to the U.K. The decision, delivered by Judge Sir Geoffrey Vos, who clearly had no time for royal drama, states that Harry was merely “stepping in and out” of the protection cohort provided by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC). In less formal terms, “Not our problem, mate.”

Harry’s appeal, heard on the 8th and 9th of April, followed years of battling for the restoration of his automatic security, a right he claims he unjustly lost after stepping back from royal duties in 2020. One can only imagine how exhausted he must feel—after all, who wouldn’t be drained from fighting a system that seems hell-bent on reminding them of their diminished status? “This one has always mattered the most,” he lamented, a sentiment that could easily be the tagline for a Netflix series about the royal family’s ever-unfolding melodrama.

The court’s ruling isn’t just a minor bureaucratic hurdle; it’s described by Harry’s legal team as a life-or-death battle. And to add a sprinkle of irony, while Harry grapples with these legal woes, he’s also trying to raise his children, Archie and Lilibet, in sunny California, where they apparently feel safer from potential threats than on their father’s home turf. His lawyers pointed out the absurdity of a case-by-case security arrangement that leaves them vulnerable, arguing that RAVEC’s failure to assess the unique risks to Harry and his family is “inadequate, inappropriate, and ineffective.”

As if this wasn’t enough, the emotional fallout between Harry and his father, King Charles, remains as frigid as ever. Reports suggest there’s no hope for reconciliation, which might come as a surprise to absolutely no one. How tragic that the ceremonial head of state could help restore his son’s security but chooses not to. It’s a royal family drama that would make Shakespeare proud—or perhaps just leave him shaking his head in disbelief.

So, what’s next for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex? Another courtroom showdown? A media blitz? Or maybe just a family therapy session that’s long overdue? Whatever it is, it’s bound to spiral further into chaos. At this point, should we even pretend to be surprised?
