MTV VJ Ananda Lewis Passes Away at 52 After Brave Battle with Cancer

Ananda Lewis, the charismatic MTV VJ who brought excitement to shows like Total Request Live and Hot Zone in the late ’90s, has died at the age of 52 after a long battle with breast cancer. Her sister, Lakshmi Emory, shared the news on Facebook, writing that Lewis is now “free, and in His heavenly arms.”
Lewis’s passing has sent shockwaves through the MTV community, with fans and former colleagues mourning the loss of a talented and courageous individual. Before her death, Lewis had been open about her struggles with breast cancer, which she first revealed in a 2020 Instagram post. At the time, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, but she later shared that she had decided against a double mastectomy, opting instead to try alternative methods to treat her condition.
In an October 2024 interview with CNN, Lewis reflected on her treatment path, expressing regret over some of her decisions. She revealed that her tumor had metastasized, and her cancer had progressed to stage 4. Despite her health challenges, Lewis remained positive and focused on living life to the fullest. In an essay published in Essence in January, she wrote about the importance of being realistic about mortality and finding ways to live life on her own terms.
Lewis is survived by her 14-year-old son, Langston, whom she shared with Will Smith’s brother, Harry Smith. Her legacy will live on through her son and the countless fans she inspired with her bravery and resilience.
