Miley Cyrus Explains Why Live Tours Are Off Her Calendar

Miley Cyrus Explains Why Live Tours Are Off Her Calendar
  • PublishedJuly 15, 2025

A soft lament hangs in the breeze, weaving through the chords of a new album even as the stage lights remain dark. Miley Cyrus has just unveiled Something Beautiful yet firmly insists that the world will not hear these songs live anytime soon.

Less than a month after the release of Something Beautiful, Cyrus addressed her touring absence on Good Morning America on July 15. She confirmed that though she is fully capable of performing, she lacks the genuine desire. Drawing attention to a fragile industry infrastructure, she suggested that current systems fail to truly support artists. “I have the opportunities to tour, I wish I had the desire, but I don’t,” she admitted, punctuating her career pivot with unvarnished honesty.

The singer, now 32, cited a legendary predecessor when explaining her resistance to nonstop travel. She pointed to Prince, who spent years traversing the globe, as a cautionary tale. Touring, she argued, makes it nearly impossible to safeguard sobriety, a cornerstone of her daily existence. “It’s really hard to maintain sobriety when you’re on the road,” she said, adding that her creative output hinges on the stability sobriety provides.

Cyrus also revisited the challenges of her past tours, noting press reports of her struggle with Reinke’s edema. In May on Apple Music’s Zane Lowe show, she described how late nights filled with drinking, smoking, and partying took a toll on her vocal cords. She now views those habits as “abuse of the vocal cords” and credits her mental wellness as another key factor in stepping back from live performances.

This retreat from the road is no surprise to longtime followers who remember the hyperdrive days of Hannah Montana. In a candid dialogue with W magazine last year, Cyrus reflected on her Disney-driven childhood. She recounted missing proms and school dances, working relentlessly under studio contracts that prioritized profits over a normal adolescence. Her gratitude remains intact, but the tradeoff shaped her longing for a more grounded life.

Despite forgoing live shows, Miley insists her bond with fans is stronger than ever. In a 2023 tweet, she declared, “When I win we win. Even if I don’t see them face to face every night at a concert, my fans are felt deeply in my heart.” She continues to explore digital experiences and inventive collaborations to nourish that connection while preserving her peace.

Born Destiny Hope in 1992, she earned the nickname “Smiley” for her childhood grin and later made Miley Ray Cyrus her legal name. Her godmother, country icon Dolly Parton, has long championed her, weaving the young star into a legacy of generosity. Inspired by a performance of Mamma Mia! alongside her father, she launched her acting career in the series Doc and captured hearts when she landed the lead in Hannah Montana at age eleven.

The stage lights may be dim for now, but the melody of Miley’s next chapter is already taking shape. The final note drifts away, inviting the next verse.
