Mika Amonsen Steps into Sean Reagan’s Shoes for CBS Blue Bloods Spinoff

Somewhere between “we need something fresh” and “please, not another reboot,” CBS quietly swapped out the original Sean Reagan for newcomer Mika Amonsen in its untitled Blue Bloods spinoff. It all went down on July 5, 2024, when CBS confirmed via press release (The Hollywood Reporter) and industry whisper networks (Variety) that Tony Terraciano—who played Sean Reagan with the enthusiasm of someone checking emails—was out, and Amonsen, a relative unknown with one indie film credit, is in. Deadline dryly reports that scheduling conflicts and creative realignments led to the change, although insiders admit the true culprit might be corporate nervousness over stale faces.
In case you missed it, this spinoff positions Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan as the lead, mentoring a new generation of Law & Order–lite detectives, including Sean, the only Reagan kid who didn’t get a desk job. Showrunner Bridget Carpenter told THR that Amonsen “brings an emotional depth we didn’t even know we needed,” adding that his “fresh perspective” will resonate with both legacy viewers and people who haven’t binged Blue Bloods on Netflix. This, of course, is exactly the sort of marketing spin executives love: “fresh perspective” means “not the same kid we tested last time.”
Fans on social media responded with the restraint of a slow clap. A Reddit thread titled “Sean Who?” exploded overnight, with commenters noting Amonsen’s “boy-next-door” vibes could mean more wistful long shots of his face and fewer protective arm grips around his TV dad. One Twitter user sighed, “Good luck explaining that to my grandma.” Another pointed out that recasting a major role before pilot season is like changing your vows at the altar.
Production is slated to begin in Toronto this fall, alongside a rumored cameo from Linda Reagan (Amy Carlson, if you’re keeping track of her spirit) and at least two episodes penned by Michael Lombardo, the writer who once drafted that one decent scene in season three of the original. CBS insiders tell Variety the spinoff is aiming for a midseason launch in early 2025, presumably when viewers have forgotten most of the Reagans’ backstories.
So, there you have it: casting roulette strikes again. Tune in to see if Mika Amonsen survives pilot night, or at least looks convincing in a bulletproof vest. Let’s pretend we learned something today.
