Martha Plimpton Spills the Tea on ‘The Goonies’ Rewatch – and It’s Not What You’d Expect

Martha Plimpton Spills the Tea on ‘The Goonies’ Rewatch – and It’s Not What You’d Expect
  • PublishedSeptember 2, 2025

I’m Sage Matthews, a cynical, world-weary observer who’s seen it all. As I scroll through the news at 2 AM, shaking my head and muttering, “Of course this happened,” I stumble upon yet another celebrity confession that’s left me underwhelmed. Martha Plimpton, the beloved star of ‘The Goonies,’ has just dropped a bombshell that’s got everyone talking – she’s only seen the iconic movie once, and that’s it. No re-watches, no nostalgia-fueled marathons, just a single viewing and done.

In a recent interview with People, Plimpton, 54, revealed that she has no interest in revisiting the classic adventure film, which was released back in 1985. “Nope. I don’t watch it,” she said with a laugh. “I’ve seen it once, and that’s good.” It’s hard not to wonder if Plimpton’s aversion to rewatching ‘The Goonies’ is a sign of her being over the film, or if she’s simply not interested in reliving the past. After all, 40 years have passed since the movie’s premiere, and Plimpton’s career has spanned decades.

However, there is one project that Plimpton doesn’t mind returning to – the 1989 dramedy ‘Parenthood.’ In fact, she recently rewatched the film, which she starred in alongside Steve Martin, Joaquin Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, and Dianne Wiest. “That’s a really lovely movie,” she noted. It’s clear that Plimpton has a soft spot for ‘Parenthood,’ but when it comes to ‘The Goonies,’ she’s adamant that one viewing was enough.

Despite her reluctance to rewatch ‘The Goonies,’ Plimpton was happy to reunite with her former co-stars at Awesome Con in Washington, DC, earlier this year. The ‘Raising Hope’ actress attended the annual pop culture convention in April, where she was joined by fellow ‘Goonies’ stars Corey Feldman (Mouth), Kerri Green (Andy), Robert Davi (Jake), and Joe Pantoliano (Francis Fratelli). Although Josh Brolin (Brandon), Ke Huy Quan (Data), and Jeff Cohen (Chunk) did not attend, the panel discussion was still a major hit.

During the panel, Plimpton and Feldman confirmed their interest in returning for a potential ‘Goonies’ sequel, which is currently in the works with Steven Spielberg and original writer Chris Columbus attached. According to Deadline, the project is “moving in the right direction.” Plimpton seemed enthusiastic about the possibility of revisiting the franchise, saying, “I think [fans are] going to see ‘The Goonies 2,’ whether we’re in it or not. I think that’s pretty obvious. At least, I hope [they] will.”

Feldman also expressed his excitement about a potential sequel, saying that he’s thrilled that Spielberg is engaged and back in the ‘Goonies’ mindset. However, their remarks came as a surprise, given that both stars had previously dispelled talk about a rumored ‘Goonies’ sequel just a few months earlier. In September 2024, Plimpton wrote on Instagram that there was no ‘Goonies 2’ script, no one attached, and Spielberg was not directing. Feldman also chimed in, saying that there was no sequel in the works.

‘The Goonies’ was directed by the late Richard Donner, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 91. Spielberg created the story for the classic family flick, which follows a group of neighborhood kids living in Astoria, Oregon, who embark on a perilous adventure to save their neighborhood. The film grossed an impressive $125 million at the worldwide box office and has since become a cult classic.

As I wrap up this article, I’m left wondering what’s next for ‘The Goonies’ franchise. Will Plimpton and the gang reunite for a sequel, or will this be a case of too little, too late? One thing’s for sure – I’ll be keeping an eye on this story, and you should too.
