Mariah’s Three-Word Clapback Floors Bezos Wedding Buzz

I suppose you desperately need my guidance here: Mariah Carey delivered the most elegant “not sorry, not sorry” reaction to the entire Jeff Bezos–Lauren Sánchez wedding saga. According to E! News, on July 5 the 56-year-old songbird stepped out for dinner in Los Angeles when a persistent paparazzo dared to ask why she wasn’t at the star-studded Venetian ceremony. With a casual tilt of her aviators, Mariah paused—then casually quipped, “I wasn’t there.” Oh, and when pressed about whether an invite ever landed in her inbox, she coolly added, “Oh, don’t turn this into that.”
For context, Bezos and Sánchez’s balmy wedding in Venice reportedly drew Kim Kardashian, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Brady—so naturally the Internet went into meltdown over Mariah’s noticeable absence. But if you’d bothered to follow her history, you’d recall her iconic “I don’t know her” zinger aimed at Jennifer Lopez back in the early aughts. Pitchfork later revealed that Mariah’s four-word barb was never meant as shade, but rather as “I really was trying to say something nice or say nothing at all.”
And yes, that catchphrase has lived on as a fully animated GIF staple. Even J.Lo herself embraced the meme, telling Andy Cohen in 2014, “I think she’s incredibly talented and I’ve always been a fan of hers. ‘My All’ is one of my favorite songs.” When Wendy Williams poked fun at the line in 2016, Jennifer volleyed back, “She’s forgetful, I guess! We’ve met many times. I don’t know her that well.”
If that’s not enough, let me fill you in on a few other celebrity tiffs you may have missed. Vanity Fair quoted Bobby Berk in January 2024 shutting down rumors of a Queer Eye rift with Tan France, clarifying, “It was something personal…and nothing romantic.” Tan later took to Instagram in March 2024 to refute claims he tried to replace Bobby. Over in Hollywood drama, Alyssa Milano denied on Instagram that she ever had the power to fire Shannen Doherty—whom Holly Marie Combs once suggested made an ultimatum behind the scenes in 2001. And in a September 2023 E! News “Stir the Pot” segment, Sharon Osbourne labeled Ashton Kutcher “rude”—a jab that went unanswered by the actor.
There, that wasn’t so hard, was it? Hopefully I’ve cleared up every last bit of celeb wedding and feud chatter without leaving you stranded in the gossip dark.
