Machine Gun Kelly Triumphs in Daughter’s Unique Name Reveal

Machine Gun Kelly revealed whose idea it was to christen his and Megan Fox’s daughter Saga Blade Fox-Baker after finally scoring a naming victory. Jordan Collins here. Okay, I’ll explain, but try to keep up.
During the July 24 edition of Today’s 8 Before 8 video series, the 35-year-old rapper, born Colson Baker, admitted he “lost the first one and won the second one” when it came to naming his children. His quip referred to his 15-year-old daughter Casie, whom he nearly named “Kid” with ex-girlfriend Emma Cannon. “When you are 18 years old and you go to her mother and you go, ‘What if we named our kid ‘Kid?’ I get why she’s like, ‘Hey man, shut up,’” MGK confessed (Today).
Fast-forward to 2023, and MGK finally got his wish. He asserted that his suggestion prevailed for his youngest child with Megan Fox, Saga Blade Fox-Baker. Explained the “my ex’s best friend” singer, “She is an epic story. That’s what saga means.” He pointed out that the name encapsulates her journey—five years of coming, disappearing, and returning—highlighting Megan’s past miscarriage before conceiving Saga (E! News).
MGK also drew on his own heritage to cement the choice. “Saga” is linked to the Nordic goddess of storytelling, and Baker hopes his daughter will inherit a flair for narrative. With three older sons on her mother’s side—Noah, 12; Bodhi, 11; and Journey, 8, with ex-husband Brian Austin Green—young Saga already steps into a blended brood full of character.
On July 24, Baker also discussed why he recently rebranded from Machine Gun Kelly to the lowercase mgk. He explained the original moniker was “derived from a mobster” and didn’t represent his real identity. By dropping the uppercase and the “Machine Gun” prefix, he claims to fuse the artist persona with the human behind it.
This isn’t the only time celebs have tweaked their names. Take Sterling K. Brown, who went by his middle name Kelby until his father’s death prompted him to honor the family name on The Kelly Clarkson Show. Then there’s the Mignogna brothers—Andrew, Matthew and Joey—who adopted the Lawrence surname in Hollywood after an agent balked at their original last name.
Actor Kat Dennings made her own change at age nine, borrowing “Kat” from Casper’s Christina Ricci character and “Dennings” from the author Lloyd Alexander’s French wife. And let’s not forget Cher, who spent decades believing her legal name was Cherilyn only to discover her birth certificate late in her career.
As part of the NBCUniversal family, Today and E! News bring you these verified details. If you thought naming a child was straightforward, think again—celebrity parents wrestle with public image, family heritage and personal branding before finding the perfect fit.
Stay tuned to see what mgk does next with his evolving persona and parenting playbook. Glad I could clear that up for you.
