L.A. D.A. Shoots Down Menendez Brothers’ Hopes for a New Trial

The long saga of the Menendez brothers just took another twist, with the Los Angeles County District Attorney, Nathan Hochman, firmly opposing their request for a new trial. This latest development comes on the heels of purported new evidence, including a 1988 letter from Erik Menendez to a cousin discussing allegations of sexual abuse, and a claim from a former Menudo member that the brothers’ father, Jose Menendez, molested him as well. Hochman didn’t mince words, asserting that this new evidence doesn’t change the brutal reality of the murders that led to their convictions back in 1996.
For those who might not remember, Erik and Lyle Menendez infamously killed their wealthy parents in 1989, and their trial became a media frenzy, shining a light on the complexities of familial abuse and what drives someone to such extreme measures. The D.A. pointed out that despite the recent claims of abuse, the core issue remains the cold-blooded nature of the murders. He noted that Lyle chillingly reloaded the gun to execute their already mortally wounded mother, a detail that sticks out like a sore thumb in any discussion about the brothers’ guilt.
Hochman even went so far as to not acknowledge the “2 Angry Men” podcast featuring the brothers, which has sparked conversations about their time in prison and personal growth. The podcast is part of a movement that’s seen many, including a significant group of their family members, advocate for their release, citing the Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” as a catalyst for changing public perception.
With a resentencing hearing set for next month, Hochman has taken a somewhat measured stance on whether to support or oppose any potential reduction in their sentences. If a judge does decide to lessen their life sentences, the brothers could be facing a parole board quite soon. So, while public interest ramps up, it’s clear that the D.A. is digging in his heels as the Menendez story takes yet another chapter.
