Kim Cattrall Breaks Silence as ‘And Just Like That’ Signs Off After 27 Years of ‘Sex and the City’

Kim Cattrall Breaks Silence as ‘And Just Like That’ Signs Off After 27 Years of ‘Sex and the City’

Hey, I’m Riley Carter. Okay, but like why is TV history doing that classic wrap-up vibe so soon?

Kim Cattrall has voiced her low-key reaction to the news that HBO’s And Just Like That will not return after its upcoming Season 3 finale, effectively closing the door on the entire Sex and the City universe after 27 years. The actress behind Samantha Jones posted a single sunset photo to Instagram on the same day that franchise showrunner Michael Patrick King and star Sarah Jessica Parker confirmed the series conclusion. Her caption simply noted, “It’s the end of a very long week,” marking her first social media move since the announcement (New York Post).

Although Cattrall famously opted out of joining Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis for the spinoff – reportedly due to longstanding tensions with Parker – she did pop up in a cameo late in Season 2. Fans immediately flagged that Samantha’s absence left a major gap in the reboot’s dynamic and arguably dulled some of the original series’ trademark sass (New York Post).

Back in June, Cattrall told The Times she still treasures the role that made her a household name. “I created a fantastic character that I loved, and I put a lot of love in it,” she said. “And if I’m remembered only for that, then that’s really OK.” Even without her full return, the memory of Samantha’s unfiltered wit remains woven into the franchise’s legacy.

Meanwhile, Parker, Nixon, and Davis each went public with heartfelt farewells. Parker, who brought Carrie Bradshaw to life, shared on Instagram that the character has “dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years.” Nixon reflected on her delight working on the project from start to finish and celebrated the camaraderie among cast and crew, while Davis praised the dedication of 400 artisans who fueled the production.

King was quick to clarify that the show was never “cancelled,” but rather reached a natural storytelling endpoint during the writing of Season 3’s finale. He explained that it “became clear” that this was the ideal moment to conclude the ongoing saga (HBO press release).

Ratings had dipped across the three seasons, and some viewers accused the series of leaning too hard into political correctness, especially around Miranda’s nonbinary love interest, Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez). Comedian Bobby Lee also chimed in, noting that certain “woke elements” were trimmed over time, though cost concerns may have played a larger role in the decision to end the show.

All told, the curtain call on And Just Like That draws a 27-year chapter to a close, leaving the door ajar for future spin-offs but signaling the end of Samantha, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte’s continuous on-screen story. Anyway, that’s the deal. Do with it what you will.
