Kelly Ripa Remembers Chewie: A Heartfelt Tribute to Her Beloved Dog

Kelly Ripa is currently navigating the painful loss of her cherished Shih Tzu, Chewie, who passed away on February 4 at the age of 17. In a touching tribute shared on Instagram, Ripa expressed her heartache and the void Chewie’s death has left in her family’s life. “We still look for her and call to her and frankly feel lost,” she shared, reflecting on the deep bond they had with their furry companion.
Two weeks after Chewie’s passing, Ripa decided to share memories of her with a heartfelt Instagram Reel showcasing happy moments throughout Chewie’s life. Initially hesitant to post, Ripa admitted, “It somehow makes it real, and I’m not quite ready to let go.” Ripa and husband Mark Consuelos, who are parents to three children, cherished Chewie as a “stoic constant companion,” during the family’s milestones, including watching their kids grow up and eventually leave home.
The couple adopted Chewie after Ripa discovered her during an adoption segment on their show, “Live with Kelly and Mark.” The decision was life-changing and brought consistent joy to their home for nearly 18 years. In a past episode, Consuelos detailed the difficult decision they had to make to put Chewie down due to her deteriorating health condition, which included a lack of appetite and dehydration. He described the experience as “probably one of the toughest things we’ve had to do as a married couple.”
Moreover, Ripa emphasized gratitude for the love and support they received during this challenging time, stating, “Our hearts may be broken, but are filled with the memories of joy Chewie gave us.” Following Chewie’s passing, the couple also gave a forever home to a Maltese/Shih Tzu mix named Lena, showcasing their continued love for animals despite the grief they are enduring.
As pet owners can relate, losing a furry friend is a deeply personal struggle that leaves a lasting impact. Ripa’s tribute resonates with many, reminding us of the unconditional love our pets provide throughout their lives.
