Justin Bieber Snubs Met Gala to Watch Maple Leafs Playoffs

Justin Bieber Snubs Met Gala to Watch Maple Leafs Playoffs
  • PublishedMay 6, 2025

If you needed a new reason to question humanity’s trajectory, here it is: Justin Bieber ditched the Met Gala carpet on May 5 to stream the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 5-4 playoff win from his couch. While wife Hailey Bieber, all black-blazer chic and Tiffany diamonds in honor of the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibit, toasted martinis on the Metropolitan Museum’s steps, 31-year-old Justin was cozied up with friends and an Instagram live on his phone. Of course, this happened—because why would a global style phenomenon outshine a hockey series in 2025?

Hailey, 28, nailed the theme celebrating Black dandyism with a sleek double-breasted mini-dress, sheer tights and patent platform pumps, channeling the legacy of tailors behind iconic Black style. She flew solo on the red carpet—something she first experienced in 2022 after debuting with Justin in 2021—while her husband’s latest post showed him laughing over a Leafs highlight reel. Vogue co-chairs like Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton and Pharrell Williams would later take the stage, but Bieber chose beer over bow ties.

This isn’t Bieber’s first digital detour. On May 4 he dropped an Instagram snap of Aussie songwriter Eddie Benjamin playing guitar—only to be photobombed by Justin hitting a bong, reigniting fan fears about his mental health after a string of “vulnerable” posts and an emotional plea for paparazzi to back off. He even shared a Coachella clip allegedly puffing marijuana next to his 15-year-old cousin, prompting insiders to tell People, “He is facing a lot of different demons right now,” and that “people are worried about him.” Add in shaky finances and strained friendships, and you’ve got a recipe for a downward spiral we were warned about.

Meanwhile, the Costume Institute’s latest exhibit, curated by Andrew Bolton and inspired by Monica L. Miller’s Slaves to Fashion, aims to showcase Black dandyism from the 18th century onward—proof that real cultural moments still exist beyond celebrity snafus. Yet here we are, fixated on whether Bieber’s living room vibes will ever justify skipping one of fashion’s biggest nights.

At this point, should we even pretend to be surprised? This will definitely age well…said no one ever.
