  • PublishedJuly 16, 2025

A cascade of spotlights and silver linings ignited the Microsoft Theater on July 16 as the 2025 ESPY Awards celebrated athletic excellence in Los Angeles. Chorus of cheers met the night’s hosts and honorees, led by comedian Shane Gillis, who guided viewers through an evening that blended star power with heartfelt tributes.

Leading the nomination pack was Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, who earned three nods including Best Athlete – Men’s Sports alongside Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder and baseball sensation Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani joined an elite group of dual nominees, matching the two nods received by Simone Biles, who ultimately captured Best Championship Performance in a category that pitted her against NBA legend Stephen Curry, World Series MVP Freddie Freeman and golf icon Rory McIlroy.

Amid athletic legends and rising stars, a special Team USA reunion unfolded as rugby standout Ilona Maher and former “Golden Girls” gymnasts Suni Lee and Jordan Chiles took their seats. Music and sport mingled when rapper Busta Rhymes joined college basketball phenom Flau’jae Johnson to present the night’s inaugural trophy, setting a festive tone.

The evening’s crowning moments arrived with the Icon Awards, bestowed on WNBA titan Diana Taurasi and U.S. women’s national team soccer luminary Alex Morgan in recognition of their transformative impact on women’s sports. Past recipients Kobe Bryant and Nick Saban have set a high bar, and this year’s honorees upheld the tradition of legendary influence.

Additional prestigious awards included the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award, earned by tennis star Sloane Stephens for her charitable initiatives, and the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, presented to NBA Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson for his lifelong advocacy. The Jimmy V Award for Perseverance honored Penn State women’s volleyball head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley, who overcame adversity to lead her team to new heights. The Pat Tillman Award for Service shone a spotlight on Los Angeles first responders and former athletes David Walters and Erin Regan, whose selfless dedication exemplifies community spirit.

Beyond these tributes, the ESPYs recognized excellence across competitive categories such as Best Breakthrough Athlete, Best Record-Breaking Performance, Best Comeback Athlete and Best College Athlete honors for both men’s and women’s sports. Rising stars and seasoned pros alike celebrated milestones, from record runs to comeback victories and championship moments.

As the curtain fell on the 2025 ESPY Awards, the sporting world reflected on a year defined by grit, grace and glory. Electric cheers faded into the night, yet the echoes of triumph promise to resonate until next year’s grand stage.

And thus our ode to athletic glory drifts off under the Los Angeles lights, leaving us eager for the next chapter of sporting lore.
