The 26-year-old queen of self-expression has been open about her transgender identity ever since she came out in the ninth grade. After losing her passport during a trip to Spain, Hunter filled out her application marking herself as female, only to receive a completely different document back. “I was still processing what was happening,” Schafer admitted, noting that she felt it was important to share her experience instantly on TikTok. “I didn’t post it for drama or sympathy,” she clarified, but rather to shed light on the harsh realities the trans community is facing under current government policies.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, just a month ago, former President Trump signed an executive order that mandated government agencies to recognize only the gender assigned at birth—totally out of touch with the times, right? A spokesperson from the State Department confirmed that they are adhering strictly to these rules despite a strong backlash from advocates and celebrities alike. Of course, not one to be stifled by labels, Hunter boldly stated that the gender marker doesn’t define her true self. “I don’t give a f–k that they put an M on my passport. It doesn’t change really anything about me or my transness,” she said. Amen to that!
As if that weren’t enough, fellow actress Nava Mau weighed in at the same event, highlighting how these policies are hitting the most vulnerable members of the LGBTQ+ community. “We must be mindful of how these policies affect us,” she asserted.
