Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber Reunite for Off-Broadway Drama—But Will It Be Worth the Hype?

Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber Reunite for Off-Broadway Drama—But Will It Be Worth the Hype?
  • PublishedApril 11, 2025

Can’t wait to see how this turns out. Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber are back together, this time not as Wolverine and Sabertooth—but as, get this, actors in two Off-Broadway plays. Yes, the dynamic duo from 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” has traded in the spandex for scripts. They’ll be gracing the stage at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre in New York City, where the performances kick off later this month. Apparently, this is the big reveal we’ve all been waiting for.

Jackman, who seems to have aged like fine wine, will take on the role of Jon in “Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes,” a title that’s as subtle as a sledgehammer. He’s playing an acclaimed novelist and university professor who gets tangled up in a morally ambiguous relationship with a 19-year-old student. Just what audiences need—another story that questions ethics and makes everyone squirm in their seats. Schreiber will be leading the charge in “Creditors,” an adaptation of August Strindberg’s work, which promises psychological thrills in the form of painterly angst and existential dread. Because, of course, that’s exactly what we crave from our theater experiences—more complicated relationships and even more complicated feelings.

Produced by Audible and the new theatrical partnership TOGETHER, led by Jackman himself, this venture aims to make live theater “intimate and accessible.” How charming. They’ve even committed to offering a percentage of tickets for free to community groups—because nothing screams accessibility like the highbrow world of Off-Broadway productions and an actor who’s worth millions. But, hey, it’s the thought that counts, right?

The plays are directed by Ian Rickson, a name that rings a bell but isn’t exactly blowing anyone’s mind. The performances run from late April to mid-June, and they’ll be recorded for those who prefer to enjoy their theater experiences from the comfort of their own couches. You know, for all those who can’t be bothered to leave the house.

On social media, Jackman shared a picture of their reunion, and let’s just say it had all the warmth of a lukewarm cup of coffee. “Amazing to be back together in a rehearsal studio,” he posted, as if we were all just dying to know about their daily happenings. It’s sweet and all, but let’s face it: the excitement is more about the nostalgia than the actual content.

So, as we gear up for this theatrical ride, let’s keep our expectations in check. Will these shows redefine the Off-Broadway experience? Or will they just be another notch in the belt of “something we didn’t ask for”? Only time will tell, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for any groundbreaking revelations.

And that’s today’s dose of reality. You’re welcome.
