Heartbreaking Loss: Two Young Cousins Killed by Old Grenade in Cambodia

Heartbreaking Loss: Two Young Cousins Killed by Old Grenade in Cambodia
  • PublishedFebruary 23, 2025

In a gut-wrenching tragedy, two toddlers in Cambodia, Muo Lisa and Thum Yen, both just 2 years old, lost their lives when a decades-old grenade detonated near their home on February 22. The incident happened in the village of Kranhuong in Siem Reap province’s Svay Leu district, an area still reeling from conflicts that left behind explosive remnants. According to Heng Ratana, director of the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC), the cousins were playing together while their parents tended to farm work nearby. Their innocent playtime turned into a nightmare as the explosion, believed to be from a 25-year-old rocket-propelled grenade, ripped through their world.

Witnessing the horrific event, one of the children’s fathers was unable to save them, as one child died and the other succumbed to injuries later at a hospital. CMAC experts analyzed blast fragments and confirmed the ordnance responsible for this tragedy, shining a light on the ongoing dangers of unexploded explosives that litter the Cambodian countryside.

The heartache is compounded by the fact that this area was a former battle zone during the Khmer Rouge regime, a conflict that left Cambodia with an estimated 4 to 6 million land mines and unexploded ordnance—the legacies of war that continue to claim lives even decades later. Many families, like that of Muo Lisa and Thum Yen, often unknowingly settle on these hazardous lands, believing them to be safe. Ratana lamented the loss, stating, “It’s a pity because they were too young, and they should not have died like this.”

In the wake of this tragedy, the importance of awareness surrounding the dangers of unexploded ordnance has never been clearer. Organizations like CMAC strive to clear these remnants of war, but with thousands of square kilometers still affected, the fight continues. This heartbreaking incident underscores a larger problem—how the residual impacts of historical conflicts can echo through generations, with innocent lives caught in the crossfire of neglect, ignorance, and the long road to recovery.
