In fact, she’s downright opposed to it. “Eating 100 grams of animal protein a day? It is vomitous to me,” Anderson told The Cut. “It’s dirty, and it’s bad for the environment, and it’s harmful to the animal, and the people, in my opinion, look terrible.” Anderson’s comments are not just about aesthetics; she’s also concerned about the serious health problems that can arise from excessive protein intake, such as altering the composition of urine and increasing the risk of kidney stones.

Excessive protein intake can also have negative effects on the environment, including increasing greenhouse gas emissions, depleting water resources, and expanding land use. Anderson herself has been vegan a couple of different times in her life and has stated that she will never eat a four-legged animal again. During her world tours with Madonna, Anderson had young Thai coconuts shipped to her wherever she was, and she would drink them after hacking them open with a machete.

For those who don’t have access to Thai coconuts, there are plenty of other vegan protein sources to explore, including beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu, tempeh, edamame, nuts, seeds, quinoa, oats, nutritional yeast, seitan, and spirulina. Vegans and vegetarians need to make sure they’re getting enough protein, as signs of insufficient protein consumption can include swelling of the stomach, legs, and hands, brittle or falling hair, dry skin, fatigue, and sometimes jaundice.
