Freddie Prinze Jr. Spills Why Celebrity Marriage Advice Is Overrated

Freddie Prinze Jr. Spills Why Celebrity Marriage Advice Is Overrated
  • PublishedJuly 7, 2025

I suppose I need to spell this out for you, since apparently even a 22-year marriage with Hollywood royalty can’t escape cringe-worthy advice. Freddie Prinze Jr., age 49, told E! News he’s been drowning in “bad” marital tips ever since tying the knot with Sarah Michelle Gellar back in September 2002. According to Freddie, most of this misguided counsel came from “dudes that were divorced,” people who evidently couldn’t manage their own relationships but felt qualified to critique his. He laughed off these warnings during an exclusive interview, explaining that advice is “like peanut butter”—it may seem delicious, but if you’re allergic, it’s deadly. In his case, those divorce-tinged nuggets didn’t stick.

Instead of chasing every self-proclaimed guru’s playbook, Freddie leans on what’s actually working: everyday simplicity with his Buffy the Vampire Slayer bride. With two kids—Charlotte, 15, and Rocky, 12—any grand gesture could feel twee. When asked about celebrating their upcoming 23rd anniversary, he quipped, “You don’t have to do anything fancy for 23. We’re pretty relaxed and private, so we just keep things chill.” Sounds like sage advice by itself, but Freddie insists he didn’t get it from any glossy magazine.

Looking ahead, the Scooby-Doo alum couldn’t be more pumped about the next decade. He’s “almost 50,” and comedian Dana Carvey, who’s been happily hitched since 1983, told him his 50s “were the best years of his marriage.” Freddie’s ready for that peak—and quietly confident that his marriage, unlike those doomsaying predictions, will thrive.

On the career front, Freddie’s reprising his role as Ray Bronson in the Jennifer Kaytin Robinson-directed I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, hitting theaters July 18. His wife won’t be joining the cast—Sarah’s character didn’t make the cut—but she’s zero percent jealous. After all, she already teamed with Robinson on 2022’s Do Revenge alongside stars like Madelyn Cline and Chase Sui Wonders. “She was more excited that we were getting to do something that takes really big swings,” Freddie noted, giving credit where it’s due.

If you’ve somehow missed their decades-long glow, glance at the couple’s cutest social media moments: a January 2019 double date with Shannen Doherty, their 2018 Halloween Royal Tenenbaums tribute and Gellar’s 2017 birthday caption, “The happiest people don’t have the best of everything, they just make the best of everything.” See? No neurotic guidance required—just two pros making marriage look easy.

Hope that wasn’t too baffling. Glad I could clear that up for you.
