Dumpster-Diving Pugs Seek Loving Homes After Heartbreaking Rescue

Dumpster-Diving Pugs Seek Loving Homes After Heartbreaking Rescue
  • PublishedFebruary 22, 2025

Picture this: a chilly day in December 2024, when a litter of seven pug puppies was discovered in a dumpster behind a Taco Bell. Yep, you heard that right. These little bundles of joy—now dubbed “the rainbow puppies”—were left to fend for themselves just hours after birth. Luckily, they were rescued by good Samaritans and ended up in the caring hands of the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, California.

The whole saga started when an unhoused individual stumbled upon them while rummaging through the trash. They were promptly handed over to a woman who initially sought help from a vet but realized she couldn’t manage the round-the-clock bottle-feeding these tiny pups required. Enter the Helen Woodward Animal Center, which jumped in with open arms and well-prepared foster families ready to help these vulnerable furballs thrive. As Kendall Schulz, the Adoption Services Director, noted, they were initially confused about the breed, labeling them as “terrier blends.” Spoiler: they’re pugs, and they’re adorable.

Now, you might think this tale reaches its happy ending right after the rescue, but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. The organization revealed that despite their best efforts, one of the pups sadly succumbed due to its fragile start. But the remaining six are now available for adoption and flaunt their vibrant new monikers—Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet—each linked to the colors of the rainbow. How cute is that?

Adoption is on a first-come-first-served basis, so if you’re dead-set on adding an adorable, colorful pug to your family, act fast. The world needs more cuddly pugs and love-filled homes. The Helen Woodward Animal Center is dedicated to celebrating every life, big or small, and they are grateful for the chance to save this precious family. So, if you’re looking for an unconditionally loving sidekick with a penchant for snuggles, it’s time to dash over to the center or check their website for more details.
