Deaf TikTok Star Imogen Nunn’s Tragic Suicide Sparks Outrage Over Mental Health System Failures

Deaf TikTok Star Imogen Nunn’s Tragic Suicide Sparks Outrage Over Mental Health System Failures
  • PublishedMarch 18, 2025

In a world where mental health awareness is supposedly at an all-time high, the tragic death of 25-year-old TikTok star Imogen Nunn exposes the glaring cracks in the system. Imogen, a profoundly deaf influencer with nearly 780,000 followers, died by suicide on January 1, 2023, after repeatedly reaching out for help from mental health professionals who, according to her family, failed her at every turn. Her death, they argue, was entirely avoidable—a damning indictment of the institutions meant to protect her.

Imogen’s struggles with mental health began at 14, and by 2018, she had been detained under the Mental Health Act following multiple suicide attempts. Despite her public advocacy for mental health awareness on TikTok, where she shared her journey with raw honesty, her private battles were met with systemic neglect. In November 2022, she informed her support worker at the Deaf Adult Community Team (DACT) about her suicidal thoughts and even mentioned a “pro-suicide forum” and a poisonous substance she had purchased online. A welfare check followed, but no British Sign Language interpreter was present, and she didn’t see a mental health professional for weeks.

By December, her situation had deteriorated. After self-harming on December 29, she was treated at a hospital but expressed her desperation in a text to her care coordinator, pleading for admission to a mental health ward with sign language support. “I cannot look after myself anymore,” she wrote. The next day, she told her psychologist she had a plan to end her life, yet her admission to a crisis facility never materialized because her care coordinator failed to meet her as planned.

Her mother, Louise Sutherland, described Imogen as “exhausted from fighting desperately for the help she needed.” The family believes that had the professionals she trusted taken appropriate action, she would still be alive today. The inquest into her death, which began on March 17, 2024, is examining the care and treatment she received from September 2022 onward.

Imogen’s story is a heartbreaking reminder that awareness alone is not enough—action is what saves lives. And yet, here we are, mourning another life lost to a system that seems more adept at bureaucracy than compassion.
