Cynthia Erivo Takes the Stage as Jesus at Hollywood Bowl This Summer!

Hold onto your hats (and your seats) because Broadway’s own Cynthia Erivo is stepping into big shoes as the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical, *Jesus Christ Superstar*, at the iconic Hollywood Bowl this summer! Mark your calendars for August 1 through August 3, because these performances promise to be anything but ordinary.
Erivo, known for her powerhouse vocals and magnetic stage presence, has got some serious acting chops. Before turning to Jesus, she rocked the role of Mary Magdalene in the 2020 all-female concept album *Jesus Christ Superstar: She Is Risen*. In that rendition, she delivered stunning performances of “Everything’s Alright” and “I Don’t Know How To Love Him,” and it’s these experiences that will undoubtedly make her portrayal of Jesus a must-see. Imagine her belting out “Hosanna,” “The Last Supper,” and the emotional rollercoaster that is “Gethsemane”—the anticipation is already building!
The production will be helmed by the talented Sergio Trujillo, who’s making a name for himself with his innovative direction and choreography. Musical direction will be in the capable hands of Stephen Oremus, whose work has graced Broadway shows like *Wicked* and *Kinky Boots*.
And if you thought that was it for the Hollywood Bowl’s summer lineup, think again! Alongside Erivo’s powerhouse performance, the opening night gala on June 7 features Hugh Jackman, who will serenade audiences with hits from *The Greatest Showman* and *The Music Man*. Plus, concert-goers can look forward to shows by A-list artists like John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, and Diana Ross throughout the season. Sounds like summer just got a major upgrade!
So, if you’re still on the fence about catching this reimagined classic, it’s time to make plans. Trust us; this is going to be one summer event that hits all the right notes!
