Chris Evans Ditches Cannes Premiere to Celebrate Mom’s 70th

Chris Evans Ditches Cannes Premiere to Celebrate Mom’s 70th
  • PublishedMay 26, 2025

Marvel’s golden boy trades the Cannes red carpet for his mom’s milestone—and I’m supposed to be shocked? Chris Evans, 43, skipped the May 23 world premiere of his dark comedy Honey Don’t! at the Cannes Film Festival, opting instead to toast his mother Lisa’s 70th birthday. Costars Charlie Day, Aubrey Plaza, Margaret Qualley and director Ethan Coen all braved the French Riviera paparazzi, while Evans was presumably elbow-deep in birthday cake.

Don’t roll your eyes yet—there’s an Instagram Story involved. On May 25, Evans confessed, “I wish I could’ve been with my incredible cast and filmmakers at Cannes, but it was my mother’s 70th birthday and there are some things you just can’t miss!” (Source: People Magazine). Bravo, Chris—family over fluorescence, I told you so.

For those who thought Evans was just being dramatic, longtime fans will recall his 2020 Esquire interview where he dubbed his mom “a nut—a character in a movie” and confessed his biggest fear of lost anonymity after taking on Captain America. Lisa Evans even laid down the cold, hard truth: “If you take the part, you just have to decide it’s not going to affect my life negatively—it will enable it,” she told Esquire. So yeah, the guy knows when to listen to sound advice. (Source: Esquire)

Now, if you think a family birthday means Evans is off the Marvel grid, think again. In Honey Don’t!, premiering Aug. 22 in theaters, he plays a charismatic cult guru opposite Qualley’s small-town PI digging into cryptic church deaths. The Cannes website even teases his “enigmatic charm”—go figure. Then on June 13, Evans returns in Materialists alongside Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal, which is just more proof that adulting and blockbuster schedules can indeed coexist.

Look, I don’t *want* to give him credit for having a shred of work-life balance, but here we are. He skipped Cannes, spent quality time with his mom, then slipped right back into his movie-star groove. If that isn’t the kind of headline you crave, what are we even doing?

And yes, before you ask, Evans still has plenty of red carpets left to conquer—just maybe not on your preferred date. Did anyone expect a different outcome? No? Thought so.
