Airport Shenanigans: Man Attempts to Smuggle Turtle in His Pants

Airport Shenanigans: Man Attempts to Smuggle Turtle in His Pants
  • PublishedMarch 12, 2025

In a bizarre twist of airport antics, a Pennsylvania man was caught red-handed attempting to smuggle a turtle—yes, a live turtle—down his trousers at Newark Liberty International Airport. The incident, which unfolded on March 7, was revealed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in a press release that left many scratching their heads. The alarm on the TSA body scanner, which is usually triggered by more conventional items like weapons, went off in a rather unexpected location: the man’s groin.

Upon further investigation, TSA officers conducted a pat-down and discovered the concealed reptile, which the man later identified as a red-ear slider turtle, measuring about 5 inches long. Not exactly your run-of-the-mill contraband! When questioned, the man calmly retrieved the turtle from his pants, wrapped in a small blue towel, which raises an entirely different set of questions regarding the appropriate way to transport a pet. “We’ve seen travelers try to conceal knives and other weapons, but this is a first for live animals,” remarked Thomas Carter, TSA’s Federal Security Director for New Jersey.

Following the unusual discovery, Port Authority Police intervened, taking the turtle into custody and contacting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service along with local animal control officials. Thankfully, there were no reports of harm to the turtle, although the man did miss his flight—perhaps an unfortunate consequence of his unconventional choice of luggage. The incident is a reminder that while air travel can be a hassle, it sometimes brings to light the oddities of human behavior.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time animals have made headlines at airports. In recent years, various pets have been intercepted during security checks, including a parrot smuggled in a backpack and a service dog that caused a stir at a terminal. As travelers continue to push the envelope of airport security norms, one can only wonder what other peculiarities lie in wait at checkpoints across the country.
