Mel Gibson Shuts Down Governor Run Despite Voter Favorability: “Flattered, But No Thanks”

Mel Gibson Shuts Down Governor Run Despite Voter Favorability: “Flattered, But No Thanks”
  • PublishedMarch 18, 2025

Mel Gibson, the man who once made Braveheart and now makes headlines for his unfiltered opinions, has somehow become the darling of a Republican straw poll for California governor. Yes, you read that correctly—a Hollywood actor known more for his controversies than his policy proposals is now the top Republican pick with 12% of the vote. But before you start imagining Gibson in a suit delivering State of the State addresses, let’s pump the brakes. A source close to the actor confirmed to TMZ that while he’s “flattered” by the support, he has zero interest in trading his director’s chair for the governor’s mansion.

Gibson’s political ambitions, or lack thereof, have never been a secret. Despite his vocal criticisms of California’s Democratic leadership—most notably Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass—he’s not about to dive into the political arena. His recent rants about the handling of January’s wildfires, which destroyed his own home, and his less-than-flattering assessment of Vice President Kamala Harris (he once quipped she has the “IQ of a fence post”) might make him a favorite among disgruntled voters, but they don’t translate to a desire for public office.

Interestingly, Gibson’s political clout seems to have peaked during the Trump era, when he was appointed as one of Hollywood’s Special Ambassadors alongside Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone. The role, created by Trump to “bring business back to Hollywood,” was more of a ceremonial nod than a policy-making position. Still, it’s clear Gibson has a knack for aligning himself with the right people at the right time—or at least the most controversial ones.

So, while the idea of a Gibson-led California might sound like the plot of a satirical movie, it’s not happening. The actor is content to keep his day job in Hollywood, where he can critique politicians from the comfort of his trailer rather than the chaos of Sacramento.

And honestly, isn’t that for the best? After all, California already has enough drama without adding “Governor Mad Max” to the mix.
