Swiftly Scammed: Two Arrested in $600K Ticket Fraud Linked to Eras Tour

Swiftly Scammed: Two Arrested in $600K Ticket Fraud Linked to Eras Tour
  • PublishedMarch 6, 2025

In a plot that could rival any pop culture thriller, two individuals have been charged with a jaw-dropping ticket scam that allegedly netted over $600,000—much of it from the glittering coffers of Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour. Tyrone Rose, 20, from Kingston, Jamaica, and Shamara P. Simmons, 31, of Jamaica, Queens, found themselves on the wrong side of the law after being accused of exploiting an offshore ticket vendor’s system to pilfer around 900 tickets, most of which were for Swift’s concerts. The Queens District Attorney, Melinda Katz, announced their arrest on February 27, revealing that the duo, alongside an unnamed accomplice, orchestrated a scheme that involved hacking into StubHub’s system to intercept tickets already sold to unsuspecting fans.

Using their employment at Sutherland, a third-party contractor for StubHub, the pair allegedly found a backdoor into the ticket vendor’s network. This digital sleight of hand allowed them to redirect ticket URLs to their own emails, paving the way for resale at exorbitant prices. The Queens D.A.’s office discovered that Rose and his accomplices exploited this loophole over a period stretching from June 2022 to July 2023, with the investigation revealing a staggering 993 intercepted tickets linked to major events, including concerts for Adele and Ed Sheeran, as well as high-profile NBA games and the U.S. Open. Swift’s Eras Tour alone attracted over 10 million fans, generating an astonishing $2 billion in ticket sales, solidifying its place as the highest-grossing tour in history.

The implications of this case extend beyond just monetary loss; they highlight the vulnerabilities in ticket sales systems that can lead to widespread consumer fraud. As the ticketing landscape continues to evolve with technology, the importance of robust cybersecurity measures becomes ever more critical. StubHub, having flagged this fraudulent activity to the authorities, underscores the necessity of vigilance in protecting consumers from such scams. For anyone who suspects they may have fallen victim to similar schemes, the Queens D.A. encourages reporting incidents to their Cyber Crimes team. In a world where fans should be celebrating their favorite artists, it’s disheartening to see opportunists exploit such joy for profit.
