Remembering Roberta Flack: The Soulful Voice Behind the Classics

Remembering Roberta Flack: The Soulful Voice Behind the Classics
  • PublishedFebruary 24, 2025

Roberta Flack, the iconic R&B vocalist who mesmerized the world with her haunting melodies, has passed away at 88, leaving a legacy that’s as rich as her voice. Known for timeless hits like “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” Flack’s unique blend of classical, blues, and pop made her a preeminent figure in music history. Flack’s journey began in North Carolina, where her musical talent was nurtured under the wings of her family. By the age of 15, her prodigious skills earned her a full scholarship to Howard University, paving the way for her illustrious career.

While she began with aspirations of becoming an opera singer, Flack eventually turned to teaching and performing in Washington D.C. nightclubs, where her warm, inviting vocals began to win hearts. Her major breakthrough came when Clint Eastwood called her to feature “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” in his 1971 film *Play Misty for Me*, catapulting her to international fame and ultimately winning her a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1973. Flack would go on to make Grammy history just a year later with another Record of the Year win for “Killing Me Softly,” making her the first female artist to achieve back-to-back wins in that category—a record only recently matched by the likes of Billie Eilish and U2.

Throughout the 70s and 80s, Flack dominated the charts, frequently collaborating with musical greats Donny Hathaway and Peabo Bryson. Her influence remained evident even in the 90s when the Fugees revived “Killing Me Softly,” introducing her soul-stirring interpretation to a new generation of fans. Beyond her musical talent, Flack shattered barriers in an industry that often marginalizes female artists, and she continued to receive accolades well into her later years, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.

Her passing marks the end of an era, but Flack’s music will undoubtedly continue to resonate for years to come, reminding us all of the emotional power of a song. In her own words, Flack once said, “If you can connect to [the feeling of love], then whatever the song is, it’s a success,” and it’s safe to say that her songs have always been just that—a resounding success.
