Daniel Day-Lewis Spills Tea on His Shocking Return to Acting: “I Should’ve Kept My Mouth Shut

I’m Quinn Parker, and I’m here to dish out the juiciest celebrity gossip – and boy, do I have a story for you! As an over-caffeinated aunt spilling thoughts faster than you can keep up, I’m about to give you the lowdown on Daniel Day-Lewis’s surprising return to acting.
Daniel Day-Lewis, the 68-year-old Oscar winner, has been making headlines recently for his decision to come out of retirement and star in his son Ronan’s new film, “Anemone.” In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, Day-Lewis opened up about his change of heart, revealing that he never actually intended to retire from acting in the first place. “Looking back on it now — I would have done well to just keep my mouth shut, for sure,” he said with a hint of regret. “It just seems like such grandiose gibberish to talk about.”
Day-Lewis had announced his retirement from acting in 2017, but it seems he wasn’t entirely sure why he was doing so at the time. “I haven’t figured it out. But it’s settled on me, and it’s just there,” he told W magazine in November 2017. “I have great sadness, and that’s the right way to feel. How strange would it be if this was just a gleeful step into a brand-new life.” However, in his recent interview, he clarified that he never fell out of love with acting, but rather wanted to take a break from the type of work he was doing. “I never intended to retire, really,” he explained. “I just stopped doing that particular type of work so I could do some other work.”
The “Lincoln” star described himself as “a proud person” with “a lot of pride,” which may have contributed to his initial decision to step away from the spotlight. He admitted that he had “reservations” about acting again that “were entirely a reflection of fear.” Day-Lewis explained that there were aspects of the acting process that left him feeling “hollowed out” at the end of it. “There’s something about that process that left me feeling hollowed out at the end of it,” he said. “I mean, I was well acquainted with it. I understood that it was all part of the process, and that there would be a regeneration eventually.”
However, after eight years away from Hollywood, Day-Lewis “had some residual sadness” realizing his son Ronan, 27, was going to be making films, which sparked his decision to return to acting. “I thought, wouldn’t it be lovely if we could do something together and find a way of maybe containing it, so that it didn’t necessarily have to be something that required all the paraphernalia of a big production,” he said. The “My Left Foot” star described collaborating with his son on Ronan’s directorial debut as “pure joy.” “As I get older, it just takes me longer and longer to find my way back to the place where the furnace is burning again,” he shared. “But working with Ro, that furnace just lit up.”
“Anemone,” written by the father-son duo, explores the complex and profound ties that exist between brothers, fathers, and sons. The film also stars Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green. Day-Lewis’s decision to return to acting has left fans and critics alike buzzing, with many wondering what prompted his change of heart. One thing is for sure – Daniel Day-Lewis is back in the game, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
And that’s a wrap, folks! I swear, I could talk about this all day.
