SAG Awards 2025: Hilarity, Technical Glitches, and a Touch of COVID

SAG Awards 2025: Hilarity, Technical Glitches, and a Touch of COVID
  • PublishedFebruary 23, 2025

The 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards had its fair share of laughs and hiccups, solidifying its reputation as the “cool aunt” of awards shows. Hosted by Kristen Bell, the night kicked off with a dose of humor thanks to the iconic Jean Smart reprising her role as Deborah Vance. Fans may be craving more “Hacks,” but the two-minute opener featuring the sassy comedienne, noting the “honor” of being with “so many amazing actresses — and Jamie Lee Curtis,” set the tone for the evening.

In an amusing twist worthy of the show’s comedic spirit, it turned out that Deborah’s invite to host was actually a notice about her unpaid union dues. Kayla, played by Megan Stalter, hilariously assumed the envelope was a hosting offer. One thing is for sure: when it comes to self-awareness and snappy humor, this show wins hands down!

Meanwhile, Martin Short scored the award for Outstanding Performance in a Comedy Series but wasn’t in attendance due to COVID, which he claims to have caught at the SNL 50th anniversary bash. Jamie Lee Curtis took the chance to jab at Colin Farrell, whom she said also infected her. “Guilty as charged,” Farrell joked, deflecting the blame to Brendan Gleeson. This exchange shows that even the glitterati aren’t immune to the perils of illness in their crowded circles.

The night had its fair share of technical hiccups too. Sound issues marred several segments, prompting Jane Fonda to bemoan, “What about the sound system? I’m gonna talk loud!” This was, unfortunately, a recurring issue, with distractions ranging from drilling noises to awkward interruptions—proving that while Netflix may have aced the art of streaming, live event production still requires a bit more TLC (and tech rehearsal). Nevertheless, the SAG Awards remain a fabulous testament to the art of performance, community, and humor in Hollywood.

While the good times rang true, so did the laughter, awkward moments, and quirks that make these shows unforgettable. After all, who can forget Harrison Ford munching on bread right in the middle of Jessica Williams’ heartfelt SAG story? Ah, Hollywood!
