Mariah Carey Stunned by Katy Perry’s Space Adventure After Months of Silence

Mariah Carey Stunned by Katy Perry’s Space Adventure After Months of Silence
  • PublishedAugust 8, 2025

Sage Matthews: If you are awake at 2 AM doomscrolling, you know nothing ever surprises you—until Mariah Carey admits she had no clue her pop peer went to space. Of course this happened.

In a recent appearance on BBC’s Radio 2 Scott Mills Breakfast Show, Mariah Carey seemed utterly baffled when asked about Katy Perry’s April 14 Blue Origin flight. The “We Belong Together” singer paused, blinked, and asked, “Did she go to space?” Her tone dripped with disbelief as she repeated, “Into orbit and back? She’s, like, floating?”

This is vintage Carey, who once quipped “I don’t know her” about Jennifer Lopez in 2003, sparking an instant meme. Nearly two decades later, she seems equally unbothered by Perry’s headline-grabbing journey.

Perry’s trip, which featured an all-female crew including Lauren Sánchez, Kerianne Flynn, Gayle King, NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, lasted roughly ten minutes. None of them exited the capsule, but Perry brought along a daisy flower in honor of her four-year-old daughter, Daisy, a nod that did not soften critics’ jabs.

The flight was widely derided as a “vanity project.” On Today With Jenna & Friends, Olivia Munn labeled it “gluttonous,” questioning the value of a joyride costing millions while many struggle to buy basic food. Actress Olivia Wilde piled on via Instagram, posting a photo of Perry kissing the ground with a caption about “billion dollars buying some good memes I guess.” Emily Ratajkowski called the mission “beyond parody,” pointing out the irony of touring space in a capsule funded by a company accused of harming the planet.

Brands joined the mockery. Fast-food chain Wendy’s tweeted “Can we send her back?” after Perry landed. Perry later fired back on social media, accusing the Internet of turning her into a “human piñata” and dismissing critics as “unhinged.”

Considering how quickly public heroes become punchlines, Carey’s astonished reaction feels almost refreshing. At least she’s honest about ignoring news that, frankly, screams “society has gone off the rails.” Four months on, she only just learned that a fellow pop star blasted off like a billionaire thrill seeker. Meanwhile, we’re over here struggling to keep track of world events.

Of course it took Carey’s casual dismissal to remind us that even space tourism cannot escape the spiral of celebrity one-upmanship and public scorn. At a time when every story confirms we are barreling toward the abyss, her shrug is its own kind of commentary.

At this point, should we even pretend to be surprised?
