Chappell Roan Warns Fans: Next Album Could Be Half a Decade Away
  • PublishedAugust 5, 2025

By Jaden Patel Jaden Patel here. Pop music fans might want to clear their schedules, because Grammy winner Chappell Roan just confirmed that the follow-up to her debut LP is farther off than your average Hollywood reunion tour. In an August 4 interview with Vogue, the 27-year-old singer born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz revealed that her second album does not exist yet and may take another five years to materialize after she spent the same span on The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.

Roan’s first collection, released nearly two years ago, became an unexpected sensation and even landed her a Grammy. Yet she refuses to treat songwriting like a fast-food assembly line. “It took me five years to write the first one, and it’s probably going to take at least five to write the next,” she told Vogue. “I’m not that type of writer that can pump it out.”

Her new single “The Giver,” which debuted during her Saturday Night Live appearance last November, offered a glimpse of what’s to come, but Roan insists that forcing creativity is worthless. She pointed to social media as the enemy of artistry. “Socials harm the f–k out of me and my art,” she said, explaining that she has largely abandoned Instagram and TikTok while in the studio. “The album process is purely, only mine. No one on TikTok gets to see it.”

This isn’t the first time Roan has sounded off about the pitfalls of fame. In a January chat with the BBC, she quipped that she might be more successful if she was “okay wearing a muzzle.” She’s also battled the pressure to overcommit, canceling festival gigs earlier this year and citing her late grandfather Dennis Chappell’s words of wisdom: “There are always options.” That advice keeps her from saying yes to every high-paying offer.

Long before the Grammys and red carpets, Roan was a Missouri teen sharing covers on YouTube. Signed to Atlantic Records during her senior year at Willard High School, her classmates heard the news over the loudspeaker. “Congratulations Kayleigh Amstutz for signing to Atlantic Records, also for lunch…it’s pizza,” she recalled in a November 2023 interview with Amazon Music.

Her stage name came straight from Grandpa Chappell, who gifted her with both a nickname and creative courage. Now she’s taking her time, letting inspiration strike when it’s ready. It might test fans’ patience, but as she sees it, an impatient artist makes impatient music. And nobody needs that.

Well, there you have it. Tune in next time for more reluctant releases and unexpected career choices.
