Song Young-kyu Found Dead at 55 Amid Career Turmoil

Kai Montgomery here, reluctantly fueling your grief with facts. Oh fantastic. Another tragic celebrity death, as if we did not see this coming.
South Korean actor Song Young-kyu was discovered unresponsive on the morning of August 4 in a parked car near Seoul. Local authorities confirmed to Variety that the 55-year-old’s body was found around 8 a.m. inside a vehicle stationed in a residential complex in Cheoin-gu, Yougon, roughly 25 miles from the capital. No foul play was detected, and officers noted there was no suicide note at the scene.
Song rose to fame with his portrayal of Chief Choi in the blockbuster 2019 comedy Extreme Job, one of Korean cinema’s highest grossers. He joined a star ensemble that included Ryu Seung-ryong, Lee Hanee and Jin Seon-kyu, playing a detective who keeps his undercover squad under wraps by operating a fried chicken joint. Friends and family are now mourning the veteran actor whose three-decade run spanned more than 40 television dramas and numerous films.
Just two months before his passing, Song was involved in a DUI incident that ended with his license revoked. According to Variety, he drove about three miles with a blood-alcohol level exceeding the legal limit. At the time of his death, he was awaiting indictment, and the scandal led to his removal from three upcoming projects: the dramas The Defects and The Winning Try, as well as a stage adaptation of Shakespeare in Love.
Song’s career began in 1994 when he made his stage debut in the children’s musical Wizard Mureul. From there, he carved out a reputation as a reliable character actor, landing notable supporting roles in the crime thriller Trick, the baseball drama Stove League, the coming-of-age tale Baseball Girl and the legal drama Hyena. His versatility earned him respect across film, television and theater circles.
Close associates tell E! News that Song’s representatives have not issued a statement, leaving fans and colleagues to process the shock. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, who now face life without a devoted husband and father.
This grim turn of events underscores the pressures that even seasoned actors endure. Expect more updates as authorities finalize their report and colleagues share tributes. And that, dear reader, is why we can’t have nice things.
