What Really Went Down in Wednesday Season One: A Complete Nevermore Recap

Jordan Collins here. I guess I can simplify this for you.
Wednesday Season One introduced viewers to Jenna Ortega’s delightfully morbid heroine as she began her stint at Nevermore Academy, the very same school Morticia and Gomez attended. Starting in 2022, this eerie reboot blended teen drama with gothic humor while planting enough twists to make your head spin.
Our story opens with Wednesday Addams arriving at Nevermore—her face set in that iconic scowl and heels dragging across the lawn. Despite her proud reluctance, connections form quickly. Werewolf roommate Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) persistently nudges Wednesday out of her shell, while aspiring beekeeper Eugene Ottinger (Moosa Mostafa) offers reluctant friendship. Even local barista and “normie” Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) earns a spot in her inner circle, much to her own surprise.
Everything changes the night a monstrous creature rips through campus grounds and kills fellow student Rowan Laslow. Our heroine witnesses the savage attack and quickly realizes that Principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie), a covert shapeshifter, is desperate to sweep the incident under the rug. When more unsettling events follow, Wednesday’s investigative instincts kick in. She refuses to let school authorities dictate her sense of justice, even if it makes her the outcast of outcasts.
The plot gets a historical twist when Wednesday starts experiencing visions of her 1600s ancestor Goody Addams confronting town founder Joseph Crackstone. Crackstone’s legacy covers up a gruesome barn-burn massacre of outcasts, including Goody’s mother. These flashbacks reveal how local history has been sanitized in modern Jericho—and why certain families, like the Gates, bear a decades-old curse of mysteriously tragic deaths.
Speaking of the Gates, Jenna Ortega’s character teams up with her mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) to clear father Gomez’s (Luis Gúzman) name. Gomez was long suspected of killing Garrett Gates during his own Nevermore days. The truth surfaces that Garrett intended to poison his classmates at the annual Rave’n dance, and an altercation with Gomez accidentally broke a vial meant for mass murder. With that misunderstanding resolved, Gomez is formally exonerated.
Wednesday refocuses on the modern mystery: the Hyde creature continues its rampage, and suspicion falls on her classmates. Devon Xavier (Percy Hynes White) plays the helpful ally by offering clues, while Tyler hesitantly supports her crusade. When arresting Xavier, Sheriff Galpin insists he is responsible for the killings. Yet at the Rave’n dance, the plot thickens: Wednesday’s first kiss with Tyler triggers a vision proving that he, in fact, is the true Hyde.
With Season Two premiering August 6 on Netflix, you now have no excuse to be lost when Jenna Ortega reopens her murder board. Glad I could clear that up for you.
