Ex-Butler Says Prince Harry ‘Keen’ on UK Education for Archie and Lilibet

Ex-Butler Says Prince Harry ‘Keen’ on UK Education for Archie and Lilibet
  • PublishedAugust 1, 2025

I’m Kai Montgomery, and I can’t believe I have to explain this, but here goes: parents with royal blood sometimes want to send their kids to prestigious schools. Shocking, right?

According to former palace butler Grant Harrold, Prince Harry is quite keen for his two children, Archie, age 6, and Lilibet, age 4, to experience a British-style education at some point in their lives. Since the Duke of Sussex moved his family to Montecito, California, in 2020, he and Meghan Markle have chosen an American upbringing for their youngsters. Yet Harrold insists there’s still a strong possibility that the siblings will spend part of their schooling years back in the United Kingdom.

“It’s very likely and it’s completely possible because if they have their younger education in America, I’m sure their father will be quite keen to have a bit of a British education,” Harrold told the New York Post. He points out that a return to the UK classroom hinges on the Sussexes’ ongoing rapport with the rest of the Windsor family. Given the intermittent peace talks between both camps earlier this year, a royal reunion could pave the way for Archie and Lilibet to enroll in British institutions.

Even though Prince Harry and Meghan dropped a legal bid for taxpayer-funded security, the prospect of a boarding school education remains on the table. Harrold, who served King Charles for seven years, speculates that Archie or Lilibet might take a royal twist on the typical “gap year” tradition. The king once toured Australia, and a stint at an elite school in England could fit the bill for the young Sussexes.

Meanwhile, across the grounds of Windsor, Prince William and Princess Catherine’s children are firmly planted in the British system. Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis currently attend Lambrook School in Berkshire, near Adelaide Cottage. Rumors say George, 12, may shift to Eton College in September with tuition running about $82,000 per year. Kensington Palace has yet to confirm any final decisions, but Charlotte, 10, is said to be eyeing Marlborough College where her mother studied.

When it comes to university plans, Harrold thinks the Waleses might break the mold by skipping traditional halls of learning. He suggests the trio could head straight to military training at Sandhurst, echoing the paths of William and Charles. “Future kings need that experience,” he insisted. Whether Archie and Lilibet follow a similar route remains to be seen, but a UK schooling chapter seems to intrigue their dad.

Despite all the back-and-forth, one thing is clear: royal education logistics are never simple. Between cross-continental moves, family dynamics, and tuition price tags, the Sussex children’s academic future is more complicated than a pop quiz on protocol.

And there you have it. Because apparently, nothing says “normal childhood” like a royal who can’t decide which hemisphere to educate his kids. And that, dear reader, is why we can’t have nice things.
