Mahomes and Kelce Flip the Field for 1587 Prime Steakhouse in KC

Mahomes and Kelce Flip the Field for 1587 Prime Steakhouse in KC

Hello, I’m Avery Sinclair, your friendly skeptic ready to slice through the fluff.

Oh, this should be good.

Ahead of the 2025 NFL season, Kansas City’s favorite quarterback Patrick Mahomes and three-time Super Bowl–winning tight end Travis Kelce announced they are opening 1587 Prime, a modern twist on a classic American steakhouse inside the Loews Kansas City Hotel later this summer. Because nothing says gratitude to your fan base quite like charging them for dry-aged ribeyes.

In a July 30 video shared on Instagram, Mahomes and Kelce played the part of amateur food critics. Mahomes gave the restaurant’s signature truffle butter a standing ovation, admitting “I could tell from the first bite, I was like, ‘yeah.’” Kelce, never one to shy away from second helpings, sampled a different butter flavor and urged his teammate, “You need some of that, dog.” Fascinating stuff if you’ve ever wondered what elite athletes do with free time.

1587 Prime promises to inject new life into Kansas City’s dining scene by partnering with hospitality group Noble 33, the same folks behind several trendy spots across the country. The restaurant’s website teases a “modern twist to a classic American steakhouse,” and fans have already spotted both players donning custom 1587 Prime baseball caps on social media. Kelce sported the hat on a recent episode of his podcast New Heights, while Mahomes posed with wife Brittany and their kids Sterling and Bronze for an Instagram snapshot featuring the same headwear.

Last April, Kelce told People Magazine that launching a restaurant is “just another thing that we want to bring to Kansas City, to be able to show our appreciation for the city, knowing how much they love their food and how much they love their football.” Translation: you cheered for us on Sundays, so please let us charge you for steak on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Kelce’s offseason resume is busier than a downtown kitchen. He unveiled a dramatic weight transformation, filmed scenes for Happy Gilmore 2, kept his podcast with brother Jason Kelce rolling, and found time to romance pop superstar Taylor Swift. In a recent Instagram post, Kelce captioned a private getaway with Swift, “Had some adventures this offseason, kept it 100.”

And in case you thought any of this was about clout, Kelce shut down those critics on the Bussin’ With the Boys podcast on July 1. “It gets thrown out there, like we’re trying to seek attention every now and then,” he scoffed. “We’re just enjoying life.” Enjoying it enough to open a steakhouse, apparently.

Taylor Swift is reportedly a fan of Kelce’s fearless approach to the spotlight, but she has yet to weigh in on whether she prefers her steak rare or well done.

For extra context, Kelce may be synonymous with Kansas City now, but he grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. He famously shouts out his hometown instead of his college alma mater, the University of Cincinnati, during player intros—something that ruffled a few Bearcats feathers.

So there you have it: two of the NFL’s biggest stars turning their Super Bowl mojo into a restaurant pitch. Pull up a chair, order the truffle butter, and let’s see if 1587 Prime can really live up to the hype.

And that’s today’s dose of reality. You’re welcome.
